PATENT OFFICE.
PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 786,164, dated March 28, 1905.
Application filed April 6, 1904. Serial No. 201,816.
To ctZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, IsAIAI-I G. SOUDDER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Middletown, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Puzzle, of which the followingis a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in puzzles, an object being to provide a puzzle consisting of two members so formed as to offer some difficulty to attach the members one to the other and to detach them, and an another object is to provide a puzzle with an advertising device, thus making it useful as an advertising medium as well as amusing.
I will describe a puzzle embodying my invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a puzzle embodying my invention, showing the parts as assembled; and Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 illustrate the manipulation of the members for separating them.
The puzzle comprises two members A B, each consisting of a single length of wire bent to form two spirally-disposed loops 1 2, which are slightly spaced apart. The member Ahas the ends of its side members 3 curved outward in opposite directions, as indicated at A 5. By thus turning the ends outward the side members are not so readily passed between the side members of the other section as would be the case were said side members straight.
Secured to the end of the side members of the member Bis a plate 6, designed for advertising purposes andalso add to the difficulty of manipulating the members. This plate may be of any suitable material and of any desired shape. To separate the members of the puzzle, the parts are to be turned to the position indicated in Fig. 2 and then twisted to the position shown in Fig. 3, so that one of the side members of one puzzle member will pass through the other member, as indicated in Fig. 4, and then the manipulated member is to be moved to the position indicated in Fig. 5 and rotated until it is disengaged. In putting together or separating no part of either member is to be sprung to be passed over a part of the other member.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A puzzle comprising two members each consisting of a single length of wire having a double spirally-disposed loop, the ends of one member being curved outward in opposite directions, the said members adapted to be placed together or separated without springing.
2. A puzzle comprising two members each consisting of a single length of wire, turned to form a double spirally-disposed loop, the ends of one member being curved outward in opposite directions, and a plate connecting the ends of the other member.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ISAIAH C. SCUDDER.
