Description
UNITED STATES PATENT UFFICE.
SALLIE THOMAS, OF NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE.
BADGE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 595,663, dated December 14, 1897.
Application filed February 5, 1897. Serial No. 622,209. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SALLIE THOMAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Badges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to badges; and the obj eat in View is to provide a simple, cheap, and attractive article of the character referred to symbolical of Washingtons birthday, the same being intended to be used by students, members of clubs, &c., for various entertainments, the badge also being to a considerable extent educational.
The invention consists in a badge embodying certain novel features and details of construction,as hereinafter fully described, illustrated. in the drawings, and incorporated in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a badge constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a reverse View of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail cross-section showing the manner in which the several parts'of the badge are assembled. Fig. 4 is a detail plan View of the hatchet.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in the several figures of the drawings.
The improved badge contemplated in this invention is intended for entertainments of all kinds held to celebrate Washingtons birthday, and is especially designed for college students and for the young people of the United States, especially those of foreign parentage, in both our public and private institutions of learning, the badge serving to arousepatriotism and honor and love of our principles of government and to imbue them with true allegience to our country.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a representation of the United States flag, which secured, preferably, by wrapping the edge of i the flag around the same, and the lower end of said staff is pointed, so as to constitute a stick-pin, adapting the same to be inserted. in the clothing of the wearer.
3 designates a hatchet which may be stamped from thin sheet material, such as brass or other metal, and finished in any suitable manner. This hatchet is provided as to its handle with two or more sets of oppositely-located prongs or tongues 4, and in applying the hatchet to the flag and staff the prongs at one side of the handle are inserted through the flag adjacent to the staff, whereupon all of the prongs are bent around and clenched upon the staff 2. This not only secures the hatchet in proper position, but also serves to aid in securing the flag itself to the staff, the hatchet thus constituting a securing-clip or fastener. The head of the hatchet occupies a position at the corner of the flag containing the stars, thus adding to the beauty of the design. It is intended to imprint upon the handle of the hatchet the date of Washingtons birth, as illustrated in the drawings, thus adding to the instructiveness of the device.
While the episode of the hatchet and cherry tree is now considered apocryphal, it is, however, associated with Washingtons birthday and is symbolical of truth. Not only is the badge highly suggestive of the occasion which it is intended to celebrate, but by reason of the construction described the several parts of the badge are neatly and effectively associated, the hatchet serving to secure the flag to the staff and having provision whereby the hatchet itself is secured to both the flag and staff.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- 1. A badge for the purpose described, con- 10 cd to pass through the flag and to be clenched upon the reverse side of the staff, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SALLIE THOMAS.
lVitnesses:
B. P. GUILL, MARGARET THOMAS.
