Toall whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MELVILLE DEARING JONES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Somerville, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Signs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. p
This invention relates to advertisements or signs for mercantile purposes, which, in addition to denoting the articles offered for sale, or the obj ect of Y the advertisement or sign, Whatever it may be, shall present a highly-ornamental appearance, which in itself shall attract attention to said advertisement or sign.
My invention relates to a Sign; and it consists in the combination, with the -back,of imitation leaves secured to the back by wires representing stems and letters grouped together with and attached to said leaves to form Words.
The drawings accompanying this specification represent, in Figure 1, a finished sign embodying my improvement, while Fig. 2shows one of the individual leaves composing said Sign, and Fig. 3 a vertical cross-section.
A designates the back of the sign, which is usually of wood, but may be of metal.
Proceeding, I provide a quantity of artificial leaves, a a, 850., in imitation of oak, laurel, or otherwise formed from zinc or other sheet metal, molded paper, or such other material I as may be found suitable, and I group these individual leaves together into any design and I fasten them with wires, which may imitate stems and branches, or by other means, so that they shall preserve in aggregate the shape of the design, and secure the whole firmlyto the foundation A. Upon the outside of the assemblage of leaves thus grouped and secured I aflixin a suitable manner the letters e, to
form words of the Sign or advertisement, and in the present, instance these letters are composed of metal. In addition to these leaves, flowers, as shown at b I b, 850., may be interposed, or fruit may be thus employed. In addition to words of the Sign, and illustrative of them, or suggestive of the purposes of the ad: vertisement, other characters may be added.
The letters 0 of the words may be composed of any suitable material-such as sheet or cast metal, wood, papier-mach, &c.and may be plain simple letters, or composite or ornamental letters.
I do not restrict myself to the nature of the leaves, botanically considered, or the material of which they are composed, or to any given design in which they are built up. Nor do I restrict myself to the form or design of letters are composed.
by wires representing stems and letters a,
