FFICE.
PATENT STAPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,679, dated July 14, 1903.
Application filed October 2, 1902.
T0 aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatl, J USTUS RUPERT, a citi zen of the United States, residing at the town of Geneva, in the county of Ontario and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staples; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. 7
My invention relates to improvements in staples; and it consists of certain novel features, that will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings, in which the same parts are indicated by the same letters throughout both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the improved staple, and Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the staple driven into a mass of wood or other like material.
A represents the staple, which is made of a single piece of wire, knotted at its center, as at a, and provided with legs a ta which legs are preferably pointed, as at a and a.
The special feature of the invention is providing the knot in the staple, whereby the center of the staple is strengthened and made less apt to spread in driving, and, moreover,
Serial No. 125,710. (No model.)
where the surface is to be struck with the hammer it is not so apt to cause the staple to tilt to one side in driving, as is common with the staples of the usual curved form. Furthermore, by having the knot in the staple when itis driven in it may be more readily drawn out with the ordinary claw-hammer.
Thus it will be seen that I provide a staple made of a single piece of wire, yet provided with a head by which the staple may be more conveniently driven in or drawn out.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
'1. As an article of manufacture, a staple made of a single piece of metal provided with a knot at or near the center thereof.
2; As an article of manufacture, a staple made of a single piece of wire knotted in the center and having the two ends bent over and pointed as shown, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
J USTUS RUPERT.
