UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
IVILLIAM II. BREVOORT, OF VINCENNES, INDIANA.
STAPLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 305,044, dated September 16, 1884.
Application filed February 1, 1584. (No model.) 4
Be itknown that LWILLIAM I-I. BEEvooRT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Vincennes, in the county of Knox and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Staples, of which the following is a specification. y
My invention is an improvement in staples, having for its objects to facilitate the insertion and withdrawal of the staples, and to more securely confine the wires or other articles intended to be secured. I secure these objects by providing the staple with aprojectinghead, as shown in the accompanying drawings, in wliichl Figure l is a perspective view of the improved staple. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. :3 is a view showing the staples applied to securing wires to a Jfence-post, and Fig. 4 is a view showing the objections to the use of st-aples of ordinary forms;
In driving the ordinary yoke-shaped staples the `blows must be applied to thc bent portion, which is frequently spread and doubled at one or both sides, as shown in Fig. 4, so that the staple fails to securely bind the wire or other article intended to be confined. It is also difficult to withdraw such staples from the wood,
and it is not unfrequent that the efforts at withdrawal result not only in defacing the wood but also in cutting or abrading the wire. To avoid these obj ections I make a staple consisting of parallel prongs a a., of equal dimensions, and a cross-bar or yoke, b, terminating in a central knob or head, c. The blows applied to the head c have no tendency to bend or spread the cross-bar, the legs therefore remain parallel, and may be easily driven until the cross-baris tirmlyin contact with the wire, as shown in Fig. 5.
Should it be necessary to withdraw the staples, as is often requisite to reset the wires, a claw or pincliers can be applied to the head c, and the extraction be easily effected.
I claim- A staple consist-ing of parallel prongs a (t, ot' equal length and dimensions, and a connecting or cross piece, b, extended to form a central head or knob, c, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my two subscribing witnesses.
VILLIAM H. BREVOORT.
