IMPROVEMENT IN WIRE BARBED FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 214,41 7, dated April 15, 1879 application filed January 20, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW M. MUNSON, of Lee, in the county of Lee and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Barbed Fences; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a section of a barbed fence-wire embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a detailed similar view of one of the double loops for holding the barbs; and Fig. 3 is a like view of one of the prickingbarbs detached from the looped wire.

Corresponding parts in the several figures are denoted by like letters.

This invention appertains to certain im provements in barbed-wire fences; and it consists in the forming of the wire with loops, arranged in pairs, into which loops are inserted twopronged wire barbs, with their pointed or sharpened prongs projecting from opposite sides of the fence, substantially as hereinafter more fully set forth.

In the drawings, A refers to a section of fence-Wire manufactured of the usual thickness. This section or wire A is formed at suitable intervals upon its surface somewhat after the form of an S, imparting to the wire a series of pairs of loops, at a, upon opposite sides thereof, as shown.

This method is one adopted for the present instance, although it is evident that this arrangement of the loops may be modified with out avoiding the spirit of my invention.

B B are a number of two-pron ged wire barbs, there being two to the same number of loops, with their sharpened or pointed prongs passing through the loops at a, and extending or projecting from opposite sides and from the upper and lower surfaces of the wire, so as to effectually arm this. After the barbs B have been inserted through the loops at 0, their points or prongs are bent at a right angle to each other, that part or point of each pair which passes through the same loop being bent in opposite directions, as shown more clearly in Fig. 1, which will retain the barbs firmly in their loops without possibility of their being accidentally displaced or becoming detached.

This invention is exceedingly simple, easy to manufacture, and consequently cheap.

Having thus fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent- As an improvement in barbed wire for fences, the combination, with the wire A, bent so as to form a series of loops, a 0, arranged in pairs, with the loops of each pair formed upon opposite sides of the wire, of the barbs B B, inserted through the said loops, in the manner and for the purpose substantially as set forth.
