WILLIAM J. BROADBENT AND ALFRED G. ROTH, OF ALLENTOWN,
PENNSYLVANIA. I
CARPET-BEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 583,784, dated June 1-, 1897. Application filed April 13, 1895. Serial No. 545,619. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM J. BROAD- BENT andALFRED G. ROTH, citizens of the United States residing at Allentown, in the county of Lehigh and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carpet-Beaters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
Our invention relates to improvements in carpet-beaters; and the object of our invention is the provision of a beater which will be simple and extremely cheap and which will when in use prevent the hand from coming incontact with objects or injuring the same, thereby producing a beater which is practical and useful and fills the place of a muchneeded article.
To attain the desired object, the invention consists of a carpet-beater embodying novel features of construction, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a perspective View of our improved carpet-beater in use, and Fig. 2 is a perspective partly broken away to show the construction more clearly.
In the drawings, A designates the handle, which is preferably made of wood, although any other material may be used, having passing through it the longitudinal parallel openings B and having attached to its inner end the plate or ear 0. Fastened to this plate 0 at D are the ends of the wire E, which pass through these openings B and are bent around to form the hand-guard F, thence passing through the openings Gin the plate 0, where they are rigidly fastened, and terminating in the oval-shaped loop or beater H.
It will be thus seen that we provide a beater which is simple and which can be produced at a very low cost, which when in use keeps the hand from coming in contact with or injuring the hand by striking against objects because of the hand-guard which is formed by the wires being bent over and fastened rigidly to the plate, so that'the beater will not impart motion to said hand-guard, and which is useful and will perform its functions in a perfect manner.
We claim- 1. As an article of manufacture, a carpet beater, consisting of the handle having the openings therein and the plate, the single piece of wire having its ends fastened to said plate and passing through said openings and bent to form the hand-guard and beater.
2. A carpet-beater consisting of the handle, the plate secured to the inner end of the handle, a single piece of wire bent to form the hand-guard and oval-shaped beater and secured rigidly in the openings in the top of the plate.
3. A carpet-beater consisting of a beating portion, a handle connected therewith, and a hand-guard arranged substantially parallel with the handle to protect the hand from contact when using the beater.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM J. BROADBENT. ALFRED G. ROTH.
