No. 208,287. Pat ented Sept. 24.1878.
. ATTORNEY- H.FE1ER& PHOTOUTHOGRAFHER. WASHING! UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
ROLAND L. BREW'ER, OF MILFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HENRY Gr. THOMPSON, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT lN BOOK-STITCHING MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 208,287, dated September 24, 1878; application filed July 11, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROLAND L.- BREWER, of Milford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Book-Stitching Machines, of which the following is a specification:
My invention relates to that class of bookstitching machines in which wire staples are used to form the stitches, and it is especially designed as an improvement upon Letters Patent N 0. 168,736, dated October 11, 187 5.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a table or anvil upon which the staple is clinched, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is an end view; Fig. 2, a longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a perspective view.
In the drawing, A represents the table upon which the work is placed, and which acts as an anvil in receiving and turning the staples. Said table is made of a triangular block of any suitable material, having a longitudinal top with its hypotenuse in a horizontal position.
The work is laid on the table, which, owing to its form and position, will always cause the same to center itself and the two sides or leaves of the book be laid evenly on the inclined sides I) b, thereby enabling the machine to stitch in the center of the fold.
The staples used with this device are constructed with points having the slant or iucline on one side, so that when driven they will open passing through the material, and, striking the edge a of the anvil, bend and clinch.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a book-stitching machine, the table A, made of triangular form, to receive the work, and cause the same to center itself and form a base or anvil upon which to clinch the staple, substantially as herein set forth.
In testimony'that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROLAND L. BREYVER.
Witnesses H. G. TnoMPsoN, I. L. ALLIs.
