IMPROVEMENT lN TUCKERS FOR SEWING-MACHlNES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,623, dated August 12, 1873; application filed March 25, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. BEAN, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Tucker for Sewing-Machines and I do hereby declare that the following is a'full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention is designed for use in connection with a sewing-machine, for making folds or tucks of varying widths and distances apart in cloth; and consists, mainly, in the employment a gageplate having one end bent, in connection with the main gage-plate, as will be fully described hereinafter.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention I will now proceed to fully describe its construction.
A represents the main gage-plate, provided with the slots to a, by means of which it is adapted to be secured to the cloth-plate of different machines by the ordinary holding-screw M. It is provided, also, with the flange a and extension a, which latter is adapted, by means of the overhanging parts a: m 00 and the setscrew or, to hold the gage-plate B in any desired position. The gage plate B consists simply of a flat strip of metal, having a small portion of its length at one end bent at right angles to the main portion, and then doubled upon itself to form the inverted U shaped part, as shown.
The manner of using my improved tucker is as follows: The first tuck having been made in any suitable manner, it is inserted in the holding part b of the gage-plate B, which is adjusted more or less remotely from the edge of the plate A, according to the distance desired between the tucks. The goods are then folded in such a manner that the folded edge will rest against the edge of gage-plate A, as shown, the plate A being adjusted more or less remotely from the line of the needle, according to the width of tuck desired. The goods are now fed to the needle, and the folded cloth between the needle and the plate A is sewed into a tuck. This operation is repeated until the desired number of tucks have been made.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
