Description

l. H.-BEAN.
Tuckers for Sewing-Machines.
N0. 145,482, Patented Dec.l6,l873.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH H. BEAN, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IMPROVEMENT IN TUCKERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 145,482, dated December 16, 1873; application filed October 11, 1873.
To all 'whom 'it may con-cem:
Be it known that I, JosEPH H. BEAN, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tuekers for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
rThis invention consists, iirst, in the employment of an adjustable plate having a bent arm of peculiar construction, which is adapted, in. connection with the plate, to hold and guide the work by the seam of the last tuck made; secondly, in adapting the main gageplate, against which the cloth is folded to form the new tuck, to extend beyond the line of the presser-foot toward the needle, so that a tuck may be made narrower in width than the distance from the needle to the edge of the presser-foot; and, thirdly, in the employment of au adjustable gage-plate in connection with the main gage-plate, as will be l'ully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of my improved tucker, as adapted for making tucks narrower than the distance from the needle to the edge of the presser-foot.
Fig. 2 represents a similar view, with the tucker adjusted for making wider tucks; and
Figs. 3, 4, and 5, views of parts detached.
To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and manner of operation.
A represents the main or base plate of the tucker, provided with the long slot a,by means of which it is adapted to be secured to the cloth-plate of the sewing-machine by the ordinary holding-screw a1,- it is further provided with a recess, a2, and the consequent projection a3, and has also the threaded stud at and slot a5, as shown. B represents the plate adapted to hold and guide the cloth by the seam of the last tuck made. It consists of a main portion, b, having the long slot b1 and tongue b2, 3, bent portion c of inverted U-shaped form, which is provided with the foot c1, the edge of which projects inwardly slightly beyond the outwardly-projectin g edge of the Vmain portion of the plate. D represents a gage-bar having a slot, d, and projecting-tongue d1, which is adapted to slide upon the plate B, and is iiXed in any desired position by means of the set-screw d2, as shown. This bar has upon its front side, for a portion of its length, a downwardly-projecting lange which rests in the recess of the base-plate, as shown.
The operation of the tucker is substantially as follows The main base-plate A is adjusted upon the cloth-plate ofthe machine, nearer to or farther from the line of the needle, as it may be desired to make a narrower or wider tuck. The gage-bar D is adjusted with the plate A, so. that its front edge coincides with the projectil'lg edge of the main plate, excepting when it is desired to make a tuck narrower than the distance between the needle and the edge of the presser-foot, in which case the projecting end of the base-plate is moved beyond the edge of the presser-foot, and the gage-bar D is adjusted against the side, as shown in Fig. 1. The plate B is so adjusted that its foot, c', rests beneath the tuck last made, with its edge pressing against the line of the seam, and the tongue upon the top of the tuck, with the edge of the main portion of the plate pressing upon the seam. Vhen thus properly adjusted, the cloth is passed through the tucker and sewed by themachine, it being guided by the seam of the last tuck made, and the new tuck being formed by laying the fold of the cloth against the edge of the main plate A, as shown. The seam of the tuck last made is griped between the spring-foot 01 Vand the edge of the main plate, so that the cloth is easily and accurately guided.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The plate B, having the bent end adapted in connection with its main plate to gripe the line of the seam, as described.
2. The combination ofthe main plate A, recessed as described, with the adjustable and independent gage-bar D, as described.
3. The tucker described, consisting of the plates A B and gage-bar D, constructed and arranged substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
This specification signed and witnessed this 7th day of October, 1873.
