Description
1. M. GmEsT'. A Attachment for Sewing Machines.
fNITEn STATI-3s .Tous M. enrnsr, on PLAINFIELD, INDIANA.
`|MPRovEMENT IN ATTAcHMENTs Fo'R SEWING-MACHINES,
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,651, dated March 11, 1873.
To all whom it muy concern:
-Be it'known that' I, JOHN M. GRIEsT, of Plainfield, in the county of Hendricks and State of Indiana", have invented a new and Improved Hemmer, Trimmer, and Creaser, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a hemmer and trimmer with a creasing attachment, constructed and Varranged as hereinafter described, and
'adapted by its peculiarities of construction for making narrow or wide hems, and for sewing trimming ou cloth, turning the edge which is sewed on under at the same time 5 also turning under the other edge, which is not sewed on, and creasing it ready for sewing.
Figure l is a plan view of my said improved hemmer, trimmer, and creaser, with a part of the folding-plates broken out. Fig. 2 is a plan ofthe bottom of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section of Fig. 1 taken on the line x. Fig. 4.- represents a front elevation, showing the hemmer adjusted for narrow hems. Fig. 5 is a front elevation, showing the adjustment for wide hems. Fig. 6 is a front elevation, showin g the arrangement for trimming. Fig. 7 is a plan view of a gage adapted to be used with the hemmer and trimmer, and Fig. 8 is a detail view of the gage.
-Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is awide plate of metal, with a hem-scroll, B, formed on one edge, the said scroll being turned under and the plate C extended under plate A as far as the width of 'the narrowest hems which I propose to make. D is a narrow plate, arranged above C as near to the under side of A as it can be and allow the cloth to pass between them to the scroll B. This plate is supported by a vertical strip, E, at the front end, and at the rear it tapers to a point with the plate C, or nearly so, corresponding to the taper of the scroll, and is attached to said plate C. The edge of this plate next to the scroll approaches the scroll only so far as to leave suficient space for the cloth to enter, and the front plate E has a notch, F, in the end fronting the scroll, into which-the hem is turned.
G isanother scroll, fitted on the plate A by a slide, H, to front the scroll B, and provided V with a clamp-screw, I, by which it is fastened to plate A, the screw being fitted in a slot, K, 'for shifting scroll G toward or from scroll B.
This plate A is attached to the presser-foot I1 at the rear left-hand corner, whereat the fold for the hem passes out of the scroll in such nannerthat it is at once delivered to the nee- For making what I. call narrow hems the scroll G is adjusted as close to the edges of the plates C and D as represented in Fig; 4, and the cloth is introduced between plate C, scroll G, plates A D, and over the edge of D into scroll B; but for wider hems I have two detachable and adjustable plates, C D', arranged similarly to C and D, but wider, and so adjusted ask to slide over and under them between the scrolls, with a slot, M, in the vertical part E', by which they are connected tof gether at the front to allow said part to slide along a binding-screw, N, fitted into plate E, for fastening the plates C D' at any position required for hems of different widths. These plates C D constitute an extension of C and D, for making wide hems, and are, together with scroll G, adjusted along plate A as required by the width of the hem to be formed.
The wide hems are made in the same manner as the narrow ones, as represented in Fig. 5.
It will be observed that the edges of plates C and C( fronting the scroll G are turned upward, as shown at O, above the loweredge of the scroll, which extends down to the table of the machine, or very nearly so, forming a narrow passage between the two plates for the cloth. u
These devices are also adapted for sewing trimming on cloth, for which they are used in all respects the same as for making wide hems, except that the edge O of plate C is shifted to the under side of the scroll G, as shown in Fig. 6, to close the space thereat. A The cloth to receive the trimming merely passes under the instrument, while the piece of trimming P passes through it, with its edges in the scrolls to be turned underthe one `in scroll B to be both turned under and sewed on the cloth, and the other to be merely turned under for subsequently finishing in any approved way, or sewing on the cloth by running through the machine without the attachment here shown.
Ipropose to combine a creaser or marker with this hemming and trimming attachment for creasing and breakingdownthefolds formed by the scroll G; and for this purpose employ a spring-Wire, Q, bent, as represented in Fig. 1, Ato attach tothe presser foot by tapering dovetail head R dropping into a vertical-tapering notch, S, in the side of the shank of the foot, and to extend across the foot and as far as the greatest extension of the scroll Gr, with a piece, T, bent downward so as to be forced down on the fold by the needle-bar, all as clearly represented in the drawing.
I also propose to combine a scale, U, with the said folding and trimming attachment, constructed with a lon g. slot for securing it adjustably on the top of the hemmer by the clampscrew I, and with a curved end, V, which is to be adjusted as far to the left from the seam as required to slightly mark the cloth to form a guide by which to feed it when sewing on trimming, the said mark being made by the piece V bearing on the cloth.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The scroll B, plates A, C, D, and E, and the adiustable scroll Gr, constructed and ar: ranged and attached to the presser-foot substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the subject-matter of the foregoing claim, of the adjustable and detachable plates C', D', and E', substantially as specied.
3. The combination, with a hemming and trimming device, substantially as herein described, of a creaser, Q R T, attached to the presser-foot, and relativelyarranged therewith and with the said hemming and trimming device, substantially as specified.
4. The combination, with the trimming and hemming device hereindescribed, of the gage' U V, substantially as specilied.
JOHN M. GRIEST.
