Description
A. L. RUMPPP.
,GUIDE FOR SEWING MACHINES.
o, 89,506. Patented Apr; 27,; 1869 ama- AUGUSTUS L. RUMPFF, OF DANSVILLE, YORK.
Letters Patent No. 89,506, dated April 27, 1869.
IIJI'ROVEMENT IN GUIDE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the limo.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AUGUSTUS L. RUMPFF, of' Dansville, in the county of Livingston, and in the State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Guides; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a guide for sewing-machines, to stitch two pieces of cloth together.
In order to enable others skilled in the art, to which my invention appertains, to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view ofthe plate of a sewingmachine, with my improvement attached; and,
Figure 2 is a side view of the guide.
A represents the plate of a sewing-machine, on which the guide B is placed. The guid B is, so to say, divided in two parts by a flange on each side, as seen in fig. 2, one part forming the handle, which isprovided with an elongated slot a, for the insertion of a thumb-screw, by the means of which the guide is secured to the table, or plate of the sewing-machine.
The other part which forms the guide proper, is provided with a hole, b, from which aslot, 0, leads out to the edge of the guide.
The guide B is secured to the plate A, in such a position that the hole b will be exactly over the needle-hole in the plate.
The two pieces of cloth which it is desired to stitch together, are then placed, one below, and the other above the guide B, and the machine putin operation. The needle passing through the hole 1), makes the stitch in the usual manner, and the stitch passes out through the slot 0, leaving the two pieces of cloth a certain distance apart, but connected, or stitched together.
The length of the stitch is regulated by the usual mode of making a loose or. tight stitch.
Having thus fully described my invention,
\Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The guide B, constructed as described, and provided with an elongated slot a, hole I), and slot 0, all substantially as shown and specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 19th day of December, 1868.
AUGUSTUS L. RUMPFF.
