Description
initrd time MENZO M. BENSTER, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
Leners Patent No. 94,175, ,lated Augier: 31, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN (IE-'UIDE FOR SEWING-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to vin these Letters Patent and making part of the same. l
To whom fit may conce/rn: I
Be it known that I, MENZO M. BENSTER, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne, and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Universal and Adjustable Presser-Foot Guide for'Sewing-Machines; and do declare that the Afollowing is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and being a part of this specification.
' Figure 1 is afrepresentation of my adj ustable presserfoot guide attached to the presser-foot as in operation.
Figure 2 is a bottom view of thesame.
Figure 3 is a representation of, a connecting-piece or plate, which, in certain cases, it is necessary touse, showing the grooves or recesses in which the adjuster works.
Figure 4 is a representation of my guide, detached.
Figure 5 is a detached view of my adjuster.
Figure 6 is a representation of my guide and adjuster attached to each other, but detached from connecting-plate oi presser-foot.v
Figures 7 to 12, inclusive, are representations of the capacity of my guide, g. 7 showing the first operation, and the others followingintheir numerical order. These operations may be continued to any desired extent. l
.The nature of this invention relates to an improved construction of a pressen-foot guide for sewing-machines, so constructed and attached that'the same is adjustable, and will guide the direction of the stitching or seam aswell upon one side or edge of the fabric as on the other; that is to say, that the work may bedone on one edge of the fabric, and then, by the peculiar adjustability of the guide, the work can be done upon the opposite edge ofthe fabric, without turning the same end for end, at and as far from either edge as may be necessary.
The invention consists in a guide, secured to an adjuster, which has a reciprocating motion in a proper recess or groove in the presser-foot, as constructed in some machines, while in others' it `will be found necessary to employ a connecting-.plate between the guide and the presser-foot, the wholebcing arranged as more fully hereinafter described. j v
In the drawings, A represents a presser-foot, provided with a recess or groove, a, within which traverses the adjuster B, which is made in the form of an elongated loop, and is secured to the presser-foot A, or to the connecting-plate' C, by engagement with the recess or groove a. v
Vhen the adjuster is secured to the presser-foot directly, there need be but one recess or' groove upon the under side, as shown, but when it becomes necessary (rendered so by the different construction of `various machines) to interpose a connecting-plate, G, there should be two corresponding recesses, one across the top and the other across the bottom of the plate. -A guide, D, is secured to the adjuster B, 'and at right angles thereto, upon its lower or bottoni side.
In attaching the apparatus directly to the presser-v foot, the front end of the guide is curved upward and inward, to form a clasp, which grasps and slides along the front edge ofthe presser-foot.
Where-it becomes necessary to interpose theconneeting-plate, both ends of the guide may be curved, in like manner as just described, to grasp the front and'rear edges of the plate, which should also be provided with a hole, b, through which the needle passes. It will be seen that by this arrangement the guide may be moved, by means of the adjuster, to either' side of the needle-hole, thereby. enabling the operator to work as many rows of stitching asV may be desired, and on either side of the needle-hole, and from each edge of the fabric, without being obliged to change the same end for end, aswhen ordinary guides are employed, as they allow the operatorto work from one edge only.
What I claim asmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The parts B D, constructed as described, arranged on'the presser, and adjustable to either side.of the needle-hole. Witnessesz MENZO M, BENSTER.
