Letters Pate'ntiNor100fl64, dated March 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FEEDING-MECHANISM FOR SEwIKG-MACHINE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all :whom it may concern:
.Beit known that 1, JAMES A. House, of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield, and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings which make part of this specification, and in which- -Figural represents a plan view of the cloth-plate of a sewing-machine to which my improvement is applied.
Figure 2, a side elevation of the same, partly in section. 1 V
Figure 3, a vertical central-section through the cam which regulates the length of stitch.
Figure 4, a horizontalsection through the cam.
My invention relates more particularly to sewing machines of the well-known Wheeler '86 Wilson type, in which the cloth is fed to the needle, to space the stitches by a feed-bar working beneath the cloth-plate. This bar is usually moved .in one direction by acam on the driving-shaft, and in the other by a spring, the retraction of which; moves the cloth. In such cases the extent of the'movement of the feed-bar, and consequently the lengthof the'stitch, is regulated by means of a cam beneath the cloth-plate.
Now,"the object ofmy invention is to enable the attendant not only tocontrol the lengtho'f the stitch, but also to ascertain the exact position of the cam,
' nd. to retain the cam, when set, securely in its ad-- justed position, to which ends I The improvement herein claimed consists in combining a regulating-cam below the cloth-plate with an index-plate above the cloth-plate, and turning with the cam accui ,tely to indicate its position, these parts being constructed to operate as hereinafter set forth. Also, in combining a cloth-plate and regulating-cam -with an index-plate, which also serves as a frictionspring to hold the cum in its adjusted position, as hereinafter described.
and causes'the .cani to turn with the pin.
The index-plate C has a scale marked on it in such relation to the pin and groove above mentioned that the cam always occupies the same position relatively to the index-plate, the figures on which accurately indicate the number of stitches in a given space.
In order to retain the cam in its adjusted position, and prevent its movement by the jarring of the machine when at work, I make this index in a concave or dished form, the convex side being upward, and thus cause it, when screwed up tightly, to act as a fi'iction-brake or spring to hold the cam securely. (See fig. 3.)
It is obvious that the index-plate might be let into the cloth-plate, so as to be flush with its upper surface, if preferred.
I do not claim broadly the combination of 'a regulating-cam and an index-plate.
I \Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is-- The combination, as set forth, of theoloth-plate,
.-the regulating-cam, and the friction-sprin g index-plate turning with the cam to indicate its position and to measure the stitches, all these parts being constructed and arranged for joint operation, as set forth;
Also, the friction-spring index-plate, constructed, arranged, and operating as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto subscribed my name.
