IMPROVEMENT iN ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 184,826, dated January 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS N. VIOLET, of
the city of Fond du Lac, county of Fond du Lac and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and useful Guide for Sewing-Machines for gaging or guiding the cloth to be sewed.
This guide may be used in ordinary sewing to bring the edges of the cloth even before the needles. It is also intended to guide seams to be felled by guiding the under fold of the cloth the proper width for felling, and the upper fold so that it will be sewed close to the edge, thereby saving the trouble of trimming the seem, as is usually done before felling. The guide is also intended for lapping seams, as when making sheets.
Thelfollowing is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making part of this specification.
This guide is provided with three tongues, held together and forming at their inner ends a gage, and they are to be separated sufficiently to allow the cloth to pass freely, but are caused to bear lightly on the cloth at their outer ends. The upper tongue or plate is provided with a gage for guiding the upper fold of cloth in lapping seams. Said guide is also provided with a movable gage for the purpose of felling, and is so arranged as to leave the under fold of the cloth wider than the upper fold-Just wide enough to turn in.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation.
I make the bed-plate A, Fig. 2, with slots 0 0 to adapt it to different machines. Two tongues or plates, as shown at B, are fastened together with a space between them, as at m, and lightly pressed together at their outer ends a. I also provide a movable gage, O, which is pivoted at t. This gage O-is shown open or in proper position for sewing common seams, and when in the position shown in dotted lines it serves to sew seams to be felled, closing part of the upper space between the two upper tongues. A gage, E, attached to the upper tongue or plate, may be made to slide on it, and may be fastened as desired for the purpose of guiding the upper fold of cloth in lapping seams, as shown at Fig. 3. 11 represents one fold of the cloth which is being passed between the tongues of the guide. I represents the other fold lapping over the edge of the fold H, just enough to make a narrow lap, as at P. Fig. 1 shows the guide when common seaming is being done, and it may be moved to or from the needle by the gage-screw so as to make wide or narrow seams.
Now, what I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The gage A with its tongues 13 B and the adjustable guide E, when constructed, arranged, and operating as set forth.
.2. In combination with the above, the pivoted gage 0, as and for the purpose described.
