IMPROVEMENT IN PIEMMERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 144,736, dated November 18,1873; application filed August 8, 1873.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL H. BRYANT, J AMEs M. BRYANT, and HoMER L. MCGAW, of the city of Pittsburg and State of Pennsylvania, have invented an Attachment for Sewin g-Machines, of which the following is a speciication: y
The object of our invention is to make hems of any desired width; also, to bind and fold cloth, muslin, or other material by means of the combined spreader, gage, and foldin g-teeth B, and iattener lt, which are represented in the annexed drawings.
Figure 1 is a side view of the attachment. Fig. 2 is a view of the upper side of the same. Fig. 3 shows the lower side of the attachment. Fig. 4 shows the combined spreader, gage, and series of foldingteeth before being bent into the form shown in Figs. l, 2, and 3.
A is a metal plate, which is to be attached to the plate of any sewing-machine. A' is a part of the plate A, and is raised from the plate of the sewing-machine a sufficient distance to admit the cloth, muslin, or other material used under the spreader, gage, and flattener. The' part A' is slotted at z, for the reception of the combined spreader, gage, and folder. H is an opening in the plate A,and, in connection with the plate C, is for the purpose of enabling the attachment to be adjusted to any machine. C is a metal plate moving in slides in the plate A, such as N N, which may be formed by bending up the edges of the plate A, as shown in Fig. 2. P P are slots in the metal plate C, which latter is secured to the plateof the sewing-machine by means of the thumb-screw D, which passes through the slots P P. The metal plate C, by sliding in the plate A, and on the screw D, serves the attachment to anysized machine. B is the combined spreader and gage, provided with the folding-teethand formed from the plate, (shown in Fig. 4,) by bending it into the form shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3. h is that part of B which serves as a gage, and moves along the edge of the plate A', which may be graduated so as to indicate the exact width of the hem. D is a thumb-screw, by means of which the attachment is secured to the plate of the sewingmachine. E is a thumb-screw, which secures the combined spreader, gage, and folding-teeth B to the plate A'. B moves in slides, as shown in Fig. 2, and is secured in its proper place by the screw E, by which means the width of the hem, Snc., is regulated. F is the needle of the sewing-machine. R is that part of the plate A' which iiattens the hem, &c. The dotted line from S shows the position of the cloth, muslin, or other material as it is placed in the combined attachment for the purpose of being hemmed, &c.
The following is the manner of using the attachment: Secure the attachment to the plate of any sewing-machine by means of the screwD move the plate G as may be necessary t0 bring the attachment into proper position relatively to the needle, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3; then, by means ofthe screw E adjust the combined spreader, gage, and folding-teeth B to any desired width of hem, &c.,which will be indi cated by the gage h. Place the cloth, muslin, or other material in the attachment, as shown by the dotted line from S, and operate as in ordinary sewing. The screw E passes through a slotted plate, z', attached to the upper section of the device B, as shown.
We claim- 1. The combination of the raised plate A', having the extension R to Hatten the hem, with the combined gage and spreader B, openiianged plate A, and sliding slotted plate C, substantially as specied.
2. The raised plate A', formed 'with the lateral extension It to iatten the hem, and provided with the combined adjustable gage, spreader, and folder B, substantially as shown and described.
