AM PHOTOLITHGFHAPH/L 04 IV. X I 173505 015 FEODESS I PATENT SARAH O. MATTESON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN ATTACHMENTS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,293, dated November 28, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SARAH O. MATTESON, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented an Improved Edger and Feller for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification:
The present invention relates to a convenient ly arranged attachment for sewing machines whereby felling, edging, hemming, and other work is done in a neat manner; and its nature will be fully understood by the following description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective representation of my improved feller and edger; Fig. 2, a plan view of the same, cloth being in position as when its two edges are overlapped; Fig. 3, a section of the device taken on line as, Fig. 2; Fig. at, a plan view of the device, the cloth being in position to be felled; Fig. 5, a section taken through Fig. 4 on line a Fig. 6, a plan view, showing the cloth in position as when it is being edged; Fig. 7, a section of Fig. 6 on line y. Fig. 8 shows how the cloth is folded in Figs. 6 and 7. Fig. 9'shows how the cloth is overlapped at Figs. 2 and 3. Fig. 10 shows how the cloth is folded in Figs. 5 and 6.
A represents a metal plate, which is provided with a slot, B, for the convenience of fastening the plate to the bed or cloth-plate of the machine, and it is folded over at C, leaving a space between A and B for cloth to pass, and it is folded back at D so as to leave space betweenD and C for cloth to pass. I) designates a notch or folding device formed in the part C close to the curve or bent edge and used to fold the edges of the cloth over preparatory to its being stitched. d also represents a notch in the plate D similar to the notch 12, which is used to fold the upper cloth as it passes through the device, so that a fell will be formed, as shown at Fig. 10, by putting the cloth once through the feller. One edge of the felled seam is sewed fast when the fell is formed, the other edge of the fell being sewed by putting the cloth through the machine again, no guide being required. The position of the cloth in the device when the double belt is being formed is shown in Fig. 6. E represents a conical spiral plate which is rigidly fastenedto the top of the plate D and which is used to fold the edges of cloth when edging is to be done, as shown in Fig. 8. In this case the edge of the lower piece of cloth is folded by being put through the notch d. Where lapped seams are to be formed and sewed the cloth can be put in the device, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
From the above description it will be seen that the important feature of the invention consists in the plates D, provided with the notches or .t'olders d b, inasmuch as the different work herein described conld not be done without them.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The plate A, folded to form the parts D C, in combination with the notches d b and conical part E, as shown and described.
