N. P. POOR.
BINDING ATTAUHMENT FOR SEWING MACHINES.
No. 338,774. Patnte'd Mar. 30, 1886.
lllllnluh UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NELSON P. POOR, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE DAVIS SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF \VATERTOWVN, NEW YORK.
BINDING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 338,774, dated March 30, 1886.
(No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NELsoN P. PooR, of Cleveland, Ouyahoga county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Binding Attachments for Sewing-Machines,
of which the following is aspecification.
The nature of my invention is mainly a binder formed with a folder between the two guide-scrolls which fold the binding-strip for :o the purpose of folding the edges of the cloth to be bound.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View. Fig. 2 is a plan. Fig. 3 is an end View, and Fig. 4 represents the rear side.
My invention is adapted and intended to be used in binding mattresses.
Hitherto the two edges of the upper and lower parts of a mattress have first been folded and sewed, and then the binding has been folded over the edges and sewed on, thus requiring two separate operations in sewing.
In the use of my binder the edges of the mattress are folded, and the binding strip folded over the edges, and all sewed together at one operation.
The upper and lower guide-scrolls, a a, are similar to those of an ordinary binder in common use. They are provided with a slotted flange or projection, e, which is attached to the bed-plate of a sewing-machine by a screw through the slot e. Another scroll-guide or folder, c, is formed on the upper scroll-guide, a, to fold the two edges of the mattress, while scroll-guides a a fold the binding-strip over 3 5 them, in order that the folded edges of the mattress and the folded strip with which they are to be bound may all be sewed together at one operation.
The two edges of the mattress pass between the upper scroll-guide, a, and scroll-guide c, which folds them, and the strip of cloth with which they are to be bound passes through opening 8, and is folded over the edges of the mattress by scroll-guides a a.
The opening sfor the binding-strip to enter, 5 instead of being at the end of the binder, is formed by cutting away the rear sides of scrollguides a a and leaving the front side or remaining part, i, to project beyond opening 8, to aid in guiding the strip with which the folded edges of the mattress are to be bound.
I claim as my invention- 1. A binding attachment for sewing machines, formed with scroll-guides a a, for holding the bindingstrip, and with the lip or guide 0 extending in between them, to form a channel or passageway for the edges of the cloth to pass through together, and in which both edges are turned over in the same direction and folded together, substantially as described.
2. A binding attachment for sewingmachines, formed with scroll-guides a a, having an opening, s, for the binding-strip to enter beyond the front part, i, substantially as described.
