' J. PATTERSON. FOLDING GUIDE FOR SEWING MACHINES.
(Application filed Mar. 5, 1901.)
(No Model.)
m/vented J L Pagil'eraam,
UNITED STATEs PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES L. PATTERSON, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO UNION SPECIAL SEWING MACHINE COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A
CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
PECIFICATION forming part (if Letters Patent NO. 691,567, dated January 21, 1902.
I Application filed March 5, 1901. Serial No. 49,722. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JAMES L. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding-Guides for Sewing- Machines, of which the following is a description, reference'being had to the accompanying drawings and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in folding-guides for attachment to sewing-machines, the object being to provide such an attachment which will fold and guide an upper piece of fabric and guide a lower piece of fabric, with a binding embracing the edge of the same, to the stitch-forming mechanism of a sewing-machine, the fabrics being secured together by lines of stitching.
The invention consists in the matters hereinafter described, and referred to in the appended claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which--- Figure 1 is a front view of a portion of a sewing-machine, showing my improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a front perspective View of the folder. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a crosssection of a portion of a garment, showing how the fabrics are folded and guided by my attachment and the parts secured together by lines of stitching.
In the drawings, A represents a base-piece adapted to be adjustably attached to the bedplate of a sewing-machine. The sewing-machine herein shown or so much of it as is necessary to a complete understanding of my invention is of the well-known Union Special type of two-line machine. Attached or formed with the base-piece A is the Vertically-curved and taperingguide B for the binding-strip, while the part C, which projects transversely of the part B and forms a continuation of it, is for guiding the binding-strip from the point of supply. Projecting from near the base of the binding-strip guide B is the substantially plane surface D, upon which the lower piece of fabric 1 rests, its raw edge being guided by the forward end of the binding-strip guide B is attached the hem-folder E, which has the folding and guiding recess F to fold and guide the upper piece of fabric 2, this folding and guiding recess F being so arrangedas to face the upper inner folding edge of the bindingstrip guide. The binding-strip guide-B at its forward end is tapered and curved, so as to practically embrace between it the raw edge of the lower strip 1, and the walls of the binding-strip guide B are turned in, so as to form a hem fold on the upper and lower faces of the the wall of the binding-strip recess B. Neal through the upper piece of fabric, its fold, and
the lower fold of the binding-strip, thus mak .ing' the seams shown in Fig. 4. of thedrawings, in which theinner edge of the hem fold on the'upper piece of fabric faces the upper inwardly-turned edge of the binding-strip.
It will be understood that I-do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction hereinbefore described, as modifications may be made without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure-by Letters Patout, is--- 1. The herein-described folding-guide, having means for attachment to a sewing-machine, and including a guide for one piece of fabric, a guide for a binding-strip having its walls formed at its forward end to embrace the edge of said piece of fabric, and a hemfolder for a second piece of fabric, the varithe lower piece of fabric, while a second line 7 ous guides being superposed and secured together; substantially as described.
2. Theherein-described folding-guide, having means for attachment to a sewing-machine, and including a guide for the lower piece of fabric, a guide for the binding-strip having its walls formed at its forward end to embrace the edge of said lower piece of fabric, and a hem-folder for an upper piece of fabric located above and secured to the bindingstrip guide; substantially as described.
3. The herein-described folding-guide, comprising an upper hem-folder, a verticallycurved and tapering binding-strip guide to which the hem-folder is secured adjacent the forward end, and a plain part upon which a lower fabric is adapted to rest, the inner wall of the binding-strip guide forming a guide for the edge of said lower fabric, the parts being so constructed and arranged that a fold is turned in the upper fabric and the edge of the lower fabric is bound, both top and bottom by the binding-strip; substantially as described.
4. In combination with a sewing-machine adapted to make two independent rows of stitches, a folding-guide arranged in front of the stitch-forming mechanism, comprising a guide for a piece of fabric, a binding-strip guide at its forward end extending partially around said guide for the fabric, and a hemfolder for folding and guiding another piece of fabric, with means for securing the latter with its inner folding edge facing one of the inner folding edges of the binding-strip, whereby as the material is fed to the stitchforming mechanism one line of stitches passes through one fabric, its fold and the other fabric, and the other row of stitches passes through the first fabric beyond its fold, the other piece of fabric and both folds of the binding-strip; substantially as described.
5. As a new article of manufacture, a folding-guide having a base-piece adapted for attachment to the cloth-plate of a sewing-machine, a hem-folder, a binding-strip guide below the hem-folder to which the same is secured, the inner wall of the binding-strip guide forming a guide for the edge of a lower piece of fabric, and the forward end of the binding-strip guide being curved to embrace between its upper and lower edges the edge of the lower piece of fabric; substantially as described.
6. The herein-described folding-guide,comprising a base-piece adapted for attachment to a sewing-machine,a guide for a lower piece of fabric, a guide for a binding-strip, having its walls formed at its forward end to embrace the edge of said lower piece of fabric, and a hem-folder for an upper piece of fabric arranged above the binding-strip guide and secured thereto, and a guide for the bindingstrip extending transversely of the feed; substantially as described.
7. The herein-described folding-guide,comprising a guide, for a lower piece of fabric, a binding-stripguide extending abovethe same, and at its forward end extending partially around the lower guiding-recess, and a hemfolder secured to the binding-strip guide, and having its inner folding edge adjacent the upper inner folding edge of the binding-strip guide, whereby in the passage of goods through the devices the inwardly-turned hem fold on the upper piece of fabric will face the upper inwardly-turned edge of the bindingstrip; substantially as described.
8. Theherein-described.folding-guide,comprising a guide for a piece of fabric, a binding-strip guide at its forwardend extending partially around said guide for the fabric, and a hem-folder for folding and guiding another piece of fabric, with means for securing it with its inner folding edge facing one of the inner folding edges of the binding-strip guide; substantially as described.
9. The herein-described folding-guidehaving means for attachment to a sewing-machine and including a guide for one piece of fabric, a guide for a binding-strip having its walls formed at its forward end to embrace the edge of said piece of fabric, and a hemfolder for a second piece of fabric having the inner edge of its folding and guiding recess facing one of the inner folding edges of the binding strip guide; substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES L. PATTERSON.
