UNITED STATES PATENT QFFICE.
JOHN P. IOOR, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
lMPROVEMENT IN'HEMMERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,873, dated August 7, 1877 application filed April 30, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN P. 100R, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Hemmer, of which the following is a specification:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved hemmer. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse section on line as a; in Fig. 1.
- Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of my invention isto provide a hemmer for turning hems of difierent widths, that may be attached to sewing-machines of various descriptions.
In the drawing, Ais a plate having the slot a, for receiving the thumb=screw that binds it to the sewing-machine, and having the offset portion B, the end of which is rolled under, forming a guide, b, for the inner edge of the hem. The said guide is tapering, being largest at the end that receives the cloth; and upon the edge of the metal forming the same an ear, c, is formed, which is bent upward so that it extends across the opening of the guide b, parallel with the plane of the plate A. O is a plate, the edge of which is turned to form'a guide, d, for the outside of the hem, which is a counterpart of the guide b. A bar, D, is attached to the guide (1, and extends through a slot, e, in the plate A, and to it a slotted bar, E, is attached, which is olfset, so that it may extend over the guide b. A rib, f, is formed on the plate A, for guiding the slotted bar E, and a binding-screw, g, is provided for clam ping it in any desired position. To the free end of the slotted bar E a plate, F, is secured, which is curved under, extending to the guide 01, parallel with the plate 0, and between the guide b and the said plate.
The hemmer is'adjusted to the sewing-machine so that the smaller end of the guide bis in front of the needle. The cloth to be hemmed is placed between the plates 0 and F, and over the edge of the plate F and around the ear 0. The width of the hem is regulated by adjusting the slotted bar E.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The plate A, having offset B, tapering edgeguide b, ear 0, and rib f, in combination with plate 0, having guide d, the bar. D, slotted bar E, screw g, and plate F, all constructed and arranged as and forthe purpose specified.
JOHN P. IOOR.
