Be it known that I, GEORGE S. GA'roHELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and fitate of New Jersey, have invented or discovered certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Hemmers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to combined hemmers and guides for sewing-machines and by means of which a suitable hem may be folded over on the edge of a piece of fabric to which a strip of other fabric-as, for example, a strip of lace-is to be attached by the same row of stitches by which the hem is stitched down; and the invention has for its object to provide a hemmer and guide of such construction that the hemmer may be convenientl y adjusted relative to the guiding edge .of the guide in such a manner that the hem may be caused to overlap the strip of material which is to be secured to the hem, more or less, as may be desired for different kinds of work. To this end the hemmer of this improvement is mounted on the part on which the guide is formed and in such a manner as to be adjustable toward and from the line of the guiding edge of the guide, such adjustment being preferably secured by mounting the hemmer on a support or carrier which is pivotally attached to the part forming the guide and which hemmer-support may be swung or adjusted laterally on its pivot and may be retained in any desired position of adjustment by means of adjusting and holding screws which impinge against the opposite sides of a rib with which the hemmer support or carrier is provided.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view of a combined hemmer and guide embodying the invention, and Fig. 2 is .a front side view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front end view looking from the left of Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the guide with the hemmer-support and hemmer removed, and Fig. 5 is an under side view of the hemmersupport and hemmer.

Referring to the drawings, a denotes a base late or arm which is provided with a slot b, by which it may be adj ustably secured to the work-plate of a sewing-machine. Rigidly attached to or formed integral with the plate or arm a is a plate 0, which is folded over so as inner ends a rib h, formed on the under side of a support 'L, which carries a scroll hemmer j, which may be of any well-known or suitable construction. The hemmer-support i is pivotally attached to the upper member of the plate 0 by a screw k, so that the hemmersupport and the hemmer carried thereby may be swung laterally on the said screw as a pivot to adjust the forward or delivery end of the hemmer nearer to or farther from the line of the guiding edge e of the guide. This adjustment of the hemmer is effected simply by slackening one of the adjusting and holding screws 9 and tightening the other, as will be understood. As the guiding-passage or guideway d between the upper and lower members of the folded-over plate 0 extends forward to the front end of the scroll-hemmer j, or approximately so, which front end of said hemmer is in practice usually located closely adjacent to the needle of the sewingmachine, the material being operated on will be so held and guided that fine and accurate work may be produced.

Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a sewing-machine hemming and guiding device, the combination with a guide consisting of a folded-over plate with a guidingpassage between its upper and lower members, and by which guide a fiat or non-folded piece of material may be directed to the needle of the machine, of a scroll hemmer pivotally mounted on said upper member so as to be laterally adjustable relative to the guiding edge of the said guide, the forward end of said guide extending forward to the front end of said hemmer, or approximately so, for the purpose of accurately guiding the work close up to the needle of the machine.

2. In a sewing-machine hemming and guiding device, the combination with a guide consisting of a folded-over plate with a guidingpassage between its upper and lower members, and by which guide a flat or non-folded piece of material may be directed to the needle of the machine, of a scroll hemmer, a hemmer-support pivotally and directly mounted on the upper member of said guide so that the delivery end of said hemmer is adjustable relative to the guiding edge of the said guide.

3. In a sewing-machine hemming and guiding device, the combination with a guide consisting of a folded-over plate with a guidingassage between its upper and lower memers, and by which guide a fiat or non-folded piece of material may be directed to the needle of the machine, of a hemmer-support mounted on the upper member of said guide, a scroll hemmer carried by said support, and means for positively adiusting said support laterally to vary the position of the hemmer relative to the guiding edge of said guide.

4. In a sewing-machine hemming and guiding device, the combination with a suitable guide by which a flat or non-folded piece of material may be directed to the needle of the machine, of a hemmer support pivotally mounted on said guide, a scroll hemmer carried by said support, and means for adjusting said support laterally to vary the position of the delivery end of said hemmer relative to the guiding edge of said guide.

5. In a sewing-machine hemming and guid- I ing device, the combination with a suitable guide, of a hemmer-support mounted on said guide and provided with a rib or projection, a hemmer carried by said support, adjusting and holding screws mounted on said guide and engaging the opposite sides of said rib or projection and by means of which screws said support may be moved laterally to vary the position of the delivery end of the said hemmer relative to the guiding edge of said guide.

6. In a sewing-machine hemming and guiding device, the combination with a suitable guide, of a hemmer-support pivotally mounted on said guide and provided with a rib or projection, a hemmer carried by said support, adiusting and holding screws mounted on said guide and engaging the opposite sides of said rib or projection and by means of which screws said support may be swung laterally to vary the position of the delivery end of the said hemmer relative to the guiding edge of said guide.
