SEWING-MACHINE HEMMER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 732,399, dated June 30, 1903.

To all whom/it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DOUGLAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elizabeth, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing-Machine Hemmers, of'
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to that class of sewing-machine hemmers-such, for example, as
that shown and described in United States In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is,
a front end view of one form of Singer hemstitch-sewing machine with the invention applied thereto, but with the parts below the work-plate omitted. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hemmer and its supportin g-bracket. Fig.
3 is a bottom view of the hemmer. Fig. 4 is a front view of the hemmer, partly in section on line 4 4L,Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view of'the hemmer and its supporting-bracket from the side opposite that shown in Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes the work-plate of the machine, and 13 the head at the forward end of the usual bracket-arm. Attached to the head 13 is a bracket 15, to which is secured a sector-plate 16. Pivotally mounted on the bracket 15 by a screw 17 is a supporting-arm 18, to which is attached a frame 19, which supports the left-hand and non-adjustable edge-turner or folder 20, a tongue 21, extending within the upper and lower parts of said folder 20, and an edgeguide 22. The said frame 19 has a shank or standard 23, provided with a slot 24:, through which passes a set-screw 25, which secures said frame to the said supporting-arm 18 in such manner as to permit the hemmer to have a limited vertical adjustment relative to the work-plate of the machine to accommodate different kinds or thicknesses of work.
Supported by the frame 19 is a second frame 26, having a slot 27, fitting a guiding-rib 28 5 5 on the frame 19, the said frame 26 carrying the right-hand or adjustable edge-turner or folder 29, within which is arranged a tongue 30, extending forward from a guide-plate 31, over which the goods to form the hem are folded, said guide-plate having a lateral ex tension 33 with a turned-up lip 34 attached to the frame 26 and which frame 26 carries the right-hand folder 29 and the plate 32, extending to the left of said folder, and which plate 32 supports the lower ply of material forming the hem.
The slot 27in the frame 26, and in which the guiding-rib 28 fits, permits of a lateral adjustment to the right or left of the righthand folder 29 relative to the stationary or non-adjustable left-hand folder 20 for the purpose of adapting the hemmer to the formation of hems of different widths, the said frame 26 and the parts carried thereby being secured 7 5 in any desired position of adjustment by the set-screw 35.
Overlying the adjustable right-hand folder 29 is a smoothing-plate 36, which assists in holding thefabric formingthe hem smooth and taut, more particularly when wide hems are being formed.
The sector-plate 16 is provided at its lower side with a horizontal lip 37, in which is tapped an adjustable stop-screw 38, against which the horizontal part of the arm 18 abuts and which screw serves as an adjustable stop for said arm, so that the forward end of the lefthand hemmer may be held in different positions of adjustment relative to the needle of the machine by varying the position of the said stop-screw, said screw being held in any desired position of adjustment bya winged set-nut 39.
Owing to the manner'in which the hemmer 5 is supported on the head 13 by the pivoted arm 18 it will be obvious that the said hemmer may be turned up out of the way, as denoted by dotted lines in Fig. 1, when not desired for use, and to retain the hemmer in either an operative or inoperative position a suitable friction device for said arm is preferably provided. Such friction device consists in the present instance of a plate 40, attached to the said arm 18 and one part of which bears against the sector-plate 16 with sufficient force or friction to retain the arm 18 in any position against accidental displacement to which it may be adjusted, said plate 40 being preferably of spring metal, so as to have some resiliency, but still being sufficiently stiff so that in cooperation with the said sector-plate said plate 40 will serve to steady the pivoted arm 18 and the hemmer supported thereby laterally.
The bearing-point of the friction-plate 40 against the sector-plate 16 is at some distance from the pivot of the arm .18, so that said friction and steadying plate will have considerable leverage on said arm in steadying the latter.
It will be noted that the arm 18 directly supports the frame 19 and that said frame 19 supports the frame 26. Thus the arm 18 supports, either directly or indirectly, all of the parts of the double hemmer, and as the screw 17, on which the arm 18 is pivoted, is at right angles to the direction of the feed of the work in sewing the double hemmer is pivotally mounted, so that all of its parts may be swung up out of the way in front (toward the operative) of the head or arm of the machine when not desired for use, leaving the workplate of the machine entirely unobstructed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a sewing-machine, the combination with the head thereof, of an arm pivotally attached to said head by a pivot disposed at right angles to the direction of the feed of the work, a double hemmer all the parts of which are supported by said arm, and a steadying friction device, at a distance from the pivot of said arm, for retaining the said pivotallymounted hemmer either in an operative or in an inoperative position, and for steadying said arm.
2. In a sewing-machine, the combination with the head thereof, of an arm pivotally attached to said head, by a pivot disposed at right angles to the line of the feed of the work, so that the said hemmer may be turned up in front of the said head, a double hemmer all the parts of which are supported by said arm, a device for retaining the said pivotallymounted hemmer either in an operative or an inoperative position, and for steadying said arm, and an adjustable stop by which the operative forward position of the said pivotally-mounted hemmer, relative to the needle of the machine, may be varied.
3. In a sewing-machine, the combination with the head thereof, of a sector-plate rigidly attached to said head, an arm pivotally mounted on said head adjacent or contiguous to said sector-plate and provided, at a distance from its pivot, with a friction and steadying plate bearing against said sector-plate, and a hemmer supported by said pivotallymounted arm.
4:. In a sewing-machine, the combination with the head thereof, of a sector-plate rigidly attached to said head, an arm pivotally mounted on said head adjacent or contiguous to said sector-plate and provided, at a distance from its pivot, with a friction and steadying plate bearing against said. sector-plate, and a hemmer supported by said pivotallymounted arm, said sector-plate being provided with an adjustable stop to vary the working position of the hemmer relative to the needle of the machine.
5. An adjustable sewing-machine hemmer adapted for pivotal attachment to the head of the machine and comprising the supportingarm 18, a frame 19 rigidly attached to said arm and carrying a stationary or non-adjustable left-hand folder, a frame 26 laterally adjustable on said frame 19 and carrying a righthand folder.
6. An adjustable sewing-machine hemmer adapted for pivotal attachment to the head of the machine and comprising the supportingarm 18, a frame 19 rigidly attached to said arm and carrying a stationary or non-adjustable left-hand folder, an intervening tongue and an edge-guide; a frame 26 laterally adj ustable on said frame 19 and carrying a righthand folder, an intervening tongue, a guideplate 31 and a supporting-plate 32, and which plates 31 and 32 are laterally adjustable with said right-hand folder.
