AM PHOTOLITHDGRAPHIC co. N.(oseomvalr PRoaEss) UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM M. VVHITING, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO THE PLUMMER SEWING-MACHINE COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,303, dated July 29, 1873; application filed June 21, 1873.
To all whom it may concern 7 Be it known that 1, WILLIAM M. VVHITING, of Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented an Improvement in Sewing-Machines for straw goods and other articles, of which the following is a specification:
This invention is especially adapted to be employed with the machine patented July 14, 1868, No. 79,856, to Hiram Plummer; and reference is hereby made to that patent'for the general features of construction and operation.
In aforesaid patent the folder 0 that crimps the braid for the needle top-ass through the same, is moved upand down similar to that in my machine. In the said Plummer machine difficulty was experienced in determining the position of the fold or bend of the braid relatively to the needle, so that the stitch would show more or less upon the surface of the goods. This difficulty is overcome by my improvement, which consists of an adjustable guide or throat through which the needle passes. The length of the needle is sufficient to allow the point to be raised or depressed slightly by springing the needle; thereby the position of the point of the needle relatively to the surface of the fabric in its bent or folded condition is varied.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a partial plan of the sewing-machine, and Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the line w a. The bed a, needle-carrier e, needle t, folder 0, and takeup arm h are similar to those in the aforesaid patent, and may be actuated by any competent means. through a throat in the bar 6, hinged at 7, and made adjustable at its other end by means of screws 8, a spring, 9, serving to keep the bar down and allowing of the adjustment by revolving the screw from above the bed. By this construction the point of the needle is raised or lowered relatively to the fold or bend in the fabric, so that the needle will penetrate the braids in such a manner that the stitch will show more or less upon the surface or else be entirely below the surface of the fabric. It is preferable that the needle-bar and needle shall be made so that one side of the needle bears against one side of the hole or throat, leaving ample room for the thread to pass without risk of cutting the same. The bar 6 is preferably hinged at one end, but it may be moved vertically in guides by the screws 8, as aforesaid.
I claim as my invention- The throat-bar 6, adjustable vertically and forming a guide to the needle, in combination with the mechanism, substantially as set forth, for presenting the material to be sewed in a bent condition to the needle 'as specified.
Signed by me this 11th day of June, A. D. 1873.
WM. M. WHITING.
