Be it known that I, ALBERT H; Dn Von, a citizen of the United States, residing at VVestfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plait-Folders for Sewing-Machines, of which the foll0wing is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

This invention relates to improvements in plait-folders for sewing machines, and has for its object to provide a device which may be readily adjusted to form box plaits of like and unlike widths at opposite sides of the lines of stitching and conveniently adjusted for presenting'the material to the action of the stitch-forming mechanism.

Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in perspective of the improved folding attaclnnent, together with so much of the bed-plate and the stitch-forming and clothfeeding mechanism of the sewing machine as is deemed essential for a proper understanding of the invention; Fig. 2 a plan view of the folding fingers and elements for effecting their adjustment, detached from the attachment base-plate; Fig. 3 an edge view of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a plan view of the complemental folding blades and fold-guide detached from the sewing machine; Fig. 5 a cross-section on the line X-X, Fig. 1; Fig. 6 a cross-section on the line XX, Fig. 3; and Fig. 7 details, in perspective, later to be referred to.

Referring to the figures, 1 represents the bed-plate of the sewing machine, 2 and 3 the front and back slide plates, respectively, 4 the throat-plate, 5-the cloth-presser, 6 the cloth-presser bar, 7 the needle-bar with its attached needles, as 8, 9 the feed-dog and 10 a portion of the head of the overhanging arm of the sewing machine.

11 represents a bracket secured to the head 10 by suitable screws, as 12 (one only of which is shown), the lower arm 13 of said bracketbeing provided with adjustably secured plates, as 14, to the outer edges of which are secured by suitable screws, as 15, complemental folding blades 16 and 17, screw 18 acting to secure said plates ln-their desired adjustment. 19 represents a foldguide rovided with an arm 20 adjustably secured in the bracket 11 by a screw 21. j

22 represents the attachment base-plate secured y screws, as 23, to the sewing ma chine bed-plate and at its fabric-receiving end provided with a tubular bearing 24 upon which is mounted an oscillating plait: fpld-registering arm 26, secured against accidental movement by a screw 25 and washer 25, and an oscillating guiding and folding finger-adjusting lever 27, a spring washer 26 acting to resist slightly the movements of the lever 27, and a pinch collar 29 secured by screw 30 acting to hold the members 26, 27 and 28 against vertical movement on said tubular bearing. 31 represents a forwardly arranged folding and guiding finger-adjusting arm provided with a pin 32 and downwardly extended tubular bearing 33, and 34 a folding and guiding finger-adjusting arm provided with a downwardly extended hearing stud 35 and pin 36.

In assembling the parts 26 to 36, both inelusive, the parts 26, 27 28 and 29 are arranged on the tubular bearing 24 in the order illustrated in Fig. 7, the tubular bearing 33 being mounted in the tubular bearing 24, and the lower end of the bearing 33 extending below the base-plate 22 a distance sufficient to receive a second guiding and folding finger-adjusting lever 37, secured by screw 38 (shown in dotted lines only, Fig. 7), followed by positioning the bearing stud 35 in the tubular bearing 33, with its lower end extending below the lower end of the bearing 33 a distance suflicient to receive the folding finger-adjusting lever 39 secured by screw 40, a pin 41 carried by an arm 42 of the adjusting lever 27 entering an opening 43 in the handle 44 ofthe lever 39, and a washer 45 secured on the pin 41 tracking the under side of the base-plate, it being understood that the levers 27 and 39 are arranged at the upper and under sides, respectively, of the base-plate 22.

At the delivery end of the attachment, the

base-plate is provided with a second tubular a folding and guiding finger-adjusting arm 56 provided with a pin 57, said bearing stud extending below the bearing 48 a distance suflicient to receive the crank-arm 58 secured by screw 59, the outer end of said crank-arm being pivotally connected to one end of a connection 60 whose opposite end is pivotally connected to the lever 39.

, are held against movement in the direction of their length, the plates 64 being cut away to accommodate the relative action of said fingers and parts directly connected therewith. The guiding finger-adjusting arms 49 and 56 are preferably slightly longer than the arms 31 and 3e, thus effecting adjustments of the fingers 61 and 62 at a slight angle to the line of seam formation.

' From the foregoing it will beunderstood that the adjustment of the finger 61 is effected through the manipulation, of the handle 454' connected with the pins 36 and; 57 through the elements 34, 35, 39, 60,, 58, 55 and 56, and that the adjustment of the finger 62 is effected through the manipulation of the lever 37 connected with the pins 32 and 50 through the elements 31, 33, 38, 54, 53, 52, 48 and 49, each finger being thus independently controlled to form plaits of like and unlike widths at opposite sides of the lines of stitching.

An adjustment of the parts as shown in Fig, 1 would effect a plait of substantially one and three-quarter inches in width, the narrower plaits being gaged by adjusting the registering arm 26 in the direction inclicated by the arrow t, and the wider plaits by adjusting said arm in the opposite direction;

but when it is desired to effect a fold wider at one Side of the stitching than at the other, either the lever 27 or 37 depending upon the'side of the stitching at which the narrower fold is'to be formed, is moved away from the arm 26 to the point of the index 6 indicating the desired width of fold.

In forming box-plaits as herein pointed out, it is, quite frequently necessary to adjust the fabric under the needle after the commencement of the stitching operation, as when one seam has been advanced beyond the other through the accidental breaking of one of the sewing threads; and when making such adjustment it is desirabletorrelease the fabric by moving. one. of the folding and guiding fingers, in the present construction the firi-gerfir toward the needles, the return movement of said finger to its given adjust ment being controlled by the 26, thus effecting relative adjustments o-f-thefolding and guiding fingers into and out of given adjustments without disarranging the fabric or consulting the index. i

Having thus set forth the nature of the invention, what I claim herein is 1. In a box-plait folder for sewing machines,the combination with oppositely arranged folding blades suspended above the sewing machine bed-plate, adjustably secured complemental folding and guiding fingers cooperating with said" folding blades to form a box-plait and, means for effecting relative adjustments of said fingersto form a given width of plait of an adjustably secured plait-fold registering member against which said means for effecting relative adjustment of the fingers may be brought in contact for restoring the relative adjust ment of said fingers when, for any purpose, their relationshipv for effecting said given width of' plaithas been disturbed.

2. In a boxlait folder for sewing machines, the com ination with oppositely arranged folding" blades sus ended above the sewing machine bed-plate, adjustably secured complemental' folding and guiding fingers cooperating with said folding blades. to, form a box-plait and means for effecting relative adjustments of said fingers to form a given width of plait having a different, width of fold at one than at the opposite side of the lines of seamformation, of an adjustably secured plait-fold reg.- istering member against which said means for effecting relative adjustment of the fingers may be brought in contact for restoring the relative adjustment, of said fingers when, for any purpose, their relationship for effecting said given width has been disturbed.

3. Ina box-plait folder for sewing machines, the combination with oppositely arranged folding blades suspended above the sewing machine bed-plate, adjustably secured complemental folding and guiding tionship for effecting said given width of plait has been disturbed.

4. In a boX-plait folder for sewing machines, the combination with a bracket provided with oppositely arranged folding blades suspended above the sewing machine bed-plate, adjustably secured complemental folding and guiding fingers one of which is adjustable independently of its coacting finger, said fingers cooperating with said folding blades to form a box-plait and means for effecting relative adjustments of said fingers to form a given width of plait, of an adjustably secured plait-fold registering member against which said means for efi'ect- 15 ing relative adjustment of the fingers may be brought in contact for restoring the rela tive adjustment of said fingers when, for any purpose, their relationship for effecting said given width of plait has been disturbed.
