UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM R. CLARK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE SINGER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF NEW JERSEY.
COMBINED HEMMER AND LACE-GUIDE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 332,700, dated December 22, 1885.
Application filed July 7, 1885. SerialNo. 170,884. (Model) To 01. whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at De troit, in the county of Vayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Combined Hemmer and Lace-Guide for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and convenient attachment for sewingmachines, for turning a. hem on the edge of a piece of fabric as the latter passes to the sewing mechanism, and simultaneously guiding a strip of lace or other material to the needle.
To this end my device consists ot'a supporting-plate, preferably provided with a presserfoot, and thus adapted for attachment to the resser-bar of a sewing-machine, said plate having on its upper side a hemmer of any ordinary or suitable construction. In front of the hemmer is preferably placed a frictionspring, between the free end of which and an inclined rib or projection beneath it the fabric to be hemmed passes, said inclined projection, against which the fabric is gently pressed by said spring, having a tendency to deflect the fabric toward the hemmer in a well-known manner, and thus keep the edge of the goods in the hemmer. The supporting-plate is provided on its under side with aguiding-passage for a strip of lace or other material, said passage being mainly on the inner side or to the right of the hemmer, the outer edge of said passage being directly beneath orin line with the hemmer,so that the edge ofthe strip guided thereby will be presented to the needle beneath the hem, and will thus be attached to the fabric by the line ofstitches by which the turned hem is secured. The strip-guiding passageis preferably made adjustable to adapt it for use with strips of different widths.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my combined hemmer and guide. Fig. 2 is a bottom view, Fig. 3 a side view, and Fig. 4 a front view, of the same. Fig. 5 is a perspective bottom view of my device with the guide-piece detached, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of said guide-piece.
A indicates the main or supporting plate of my device, and B is a presser-foot, by which said plate may be removably fastened to the sewing-machine presserbar. Secured to the plate A in front of the needle-opening b ofthe presser-foot is an ordinary twisted hemmer,0, said hemmer being preferably formed integral with its attaching-plate c, which is bent over to form an outwardly-extending springarm, D, and beneath the outer or free end of the latter is an inclined rib or projectiomc, herein shown as being struck up from the plate a, the inclination of said rib being indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. l. The supporting-plate A has on its under side an inclosed guidingpassage, E, for the strip of lace or other material which is to be attached to the edge of the fabric by the stitches which secure the hem, said guiding-passage being forward of the rear end of the hcmmer, and below and mainly on the inner or right-handside of the latter, Fig. 1, with its outer edge directly beneath or in line with said hemmer. The guiding-passage, as herein shown, is formed by a downwardly and inwardly turned lip,a, on the plate A, and an adjustable hollow guide-piece, F, formed ofthin metal, and having spring-armsf f, passing through slots a in a rib, a, on the under side of the plate A. The guidepieceF may be adjusted toward or from the lip a, to vary the width of the guiding-passage E, the spring-armsff havingsuflicientfriction in the slots at of the rib a to hold saidguide-piece in any position to which it may be adjusted. The
' bottom of the presser--foot B is preferably recessed slightly at b on its inner side, beneath which the hem and the secured strip passes, so as to compensate for the increased thickness of the work at this side, and thus insurethe accurate working of the feed.
In the use of my device the fabric to be hemmed passes beneath the springarm or friction-spring D, the latter pressing the fabric gently against the inclined rib c, which has a tendency to deflect the fabrictoward the hemmer O, which latter turns in the edge to form a hem in the usual manner. The strip oflace or other material to be attached to the edge of the fabric simultaneously with the sewing of the hem passes through the guiding-passage E, and as the inner edge of the latter is in line with the hemmer, the accurate presentation I 10 the rear end thereof, an inclosed strip-guiding passage, which is mainly inside or to the right of said hemmer, but having its outer edge in line with the latter, substantially as set forth.
2. In asewing-machine attachment, the com- I5 bination, with a supporting-plate having a strip-guiding passage on its under side, of a hemmer supported above said plate, a frictionspring in front of said hemmer, and an inclined rib or projection beneath the outer end 20 of said friction-spring, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, with the hemmer, of the supporting-plate having the lip'a and slotted rib a, of the adjustable guide-piece F, said lip and guide-piece serving to form an adjustable or variable strip-guiding passage, substantially as set forth.
4.. In asewing-inachine'attaohment,the combination, with a hemmer, ofa supporting-plate therefor, having on its under side, below the hemmer and forward of the rear end thereof, an inclosed strip-guiding passage, mainly inside or to the right of said hemmer, and a presser-foot having a recess, as b, 0n the inner side of its lower or bearing surface, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM R. CLARK.
