E. 'J. MOORE. DEVICE FOR HOLDING MATERIAL TO BE SEWED. No. 287,044. Patented Oct. 23, 1883.

UNITED STATES r PATENT OFFICE.
ELLA J. MOORE, OF BRIMFIELD, ILLINOIS.
DEVICE FOR HOLDING MATERIAL TO BE SEWED.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 287,044, dated October 23, 1883.
Application filed February 2, 188:].
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA J. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brimfield, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Device for Holding Material to be Sewed, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to a new and useful deviceto be attached to the under side of the top or leaf of a sewing-machine table or stand for the purpose of holding material to be sewed or basted by hand, so that it may beheld and of ways.
handled conveniently and without danger of dragging upon the floor; and it consists in the improved construction and arrangement of the said device, which will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.-
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sewingholdi'ng device. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same, showing several modifications. Fig. 3 is a perspective view, showing the device attached to a sewing-machine table, and illustrating its operation and Fig. 4 is a side view of the table having the device attached.
The same letters refer to the same parts in all the figures.
A in the drawings represents a'plate of sheet metal, which is bent so as to forma downwardlyprojecting double flange, B, which, as shown in the several modifications illustrated in Fig. 2, may be located either centrally under or at either end of the plate, and may be formed by bending the said plate in a variety The lower outer edge of the said flange is provided with a series of openings, through which project the sharpened points 0 of pins or barbs D, secured between theleaves (No model.)
of the flange B by solder or in any other suitable manner. The said leaves may also be soldered together or otherwise connected, if deemed desirable. The plate A has openings E, to receive screws by which it may be se' cured in position for operation.
The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings hereto annexed. When the device is secured in position, the points are turned inward, so that while material may readily be hooked uponi them, they will not be liable to catch in and tear the clothes of the operator, who, by adjusting the material to be sewed or basted upon the said hooks, may readily hold it in the desired position while working.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States 1. A device for holding sewing, consisting of a plate having a downwardly-projecting double flange, between the leaves of which are secured sharp -pointedpins or barbs, the points of which project through perforations in the edge of said flange and are bent rearwardly, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the top or leaf of a sewing-machine table or stand, of a plate secured to the under side of such top or leaf, and having a downwardly-extending double flange, between the leaves of which are secured pins or barbs having sharp points proj ecting outwardly and rearwardly from the edge of said flange, substantially as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own .I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
. ELLA J. MOORE.
