Description

SARAH L. FAWCETT.
'ScisSo'rs for Use with Sewing-Machines.
No.158,054. Pat ented Dec.22,l87.,
- WITNESSES: I "m:
BY W nmusvs.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SARAH L. FAWGETT, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN SCISSORS FOR USE WITH SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 158,054, dated December 22, 1874; application filed November 21, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, Mrs. SARAH L. FAVVCETT, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Combination Machine-Scissors, of which the following is a specification:
My invention comprises a pair of scissors with a sharp cuttingho'ok to free the cotton from the rotating hook of a sewing-machine, and a pulling-hook for drawing the cotton from under the needle. The contrivance is particularly adapted for the Willcox & Gibbs sewing-machine, and all machines which use the rotating hook. It is also very useful on account of its many qualities for all sewingmachines.
The drawing is a side view of my improved combined implement.
A and B represent the blades of a pair of scissors. 0 represents the sharp thread-cutting hook for freeing the rotating hook of the sewing-machine 01: the thread which winds on it at times when the machine fails to sew properly. This hook is located on the back of the blade B, at the point; it inclines toward the handles sufficiently to engage and cut the thread, and it also curves to the right to adapt it to the peculiar form of the cavity or depression in the hook, in which it engages the thread better than if made straight in that direction, but it will serve the purpose well without this curve. D is the hook for pulling the thread from under and through the needle preparatory to cutting it off to remove the Work. This book will be very useful for this purpose, as it will always be certain to catch the thread when presented, which it is difficult to do with the fingers, and besides, it requires care to catch it by the fingers without pricking them by the point of the needle. E represents the screw-driver, which is formed on the point of the blade having the hook D, and F represents the needle sharpening file, which is arranged on the side of the same blade.
The most essential features of the implements are the hooks upon the blades of the scissors, and the screw-driver and the file may be used or not, as may be preferred.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Pate11t A pair of scissors, having at the end of one of the blades a thread-cutting hook, C, and provided at the end of the other blade with a thread-pulling hook, D, as and for the purpose described.
