TRIMMER FOR SEWING MACHINES.
APPLICATION FILED FEB. B. 1905.
IN1/EIN To/a M f @may VIRGINIA WHITEHEAD GLOVER, OF SAVANNAH, GEORGIA.
TRININIER FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1 7, 1905.
Application filed February 8, 1905. Serial No. 244,818.
To @ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VIRGINIA WHITEHEAD GLovER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Savannah, in the county of Chatham and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trimmers for Sewing-Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in trimmers for sewing-machines; and the object of the invention is to produce a simple and efficient means which may be readily applied to a sewing-machine, whereby the trimmers may be operated by the needlecarrying bar.
More specifically, the invention consists in the provision of a slide which is adapted to t the grooveways of the usual shuttle-slide upon a machine and carrying the trimmerblades and so arranged that one of the trimmer-blades may be actuated by a verticallyreciprocating needle-carrying bar.
The invention consists, further, in various details of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and then specically deiined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which* Figure l is a side elevation showing my device as applied to a sewing-machine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective view of the trimmers and the slide carrying the same, and Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the trimmers.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the table of the machine, B the presser-foot, and C the needle-carrying bar, all of the usual construction in sewing-machines. D designates a headed screw which is adapted to hold the needle E in place within said bar.
Referring to Fig. 2 of the drawings, F designates a slide with beveled edges F', which is adapted to lit the groove in which the shuttleslide is usually mounted, and said slide is provided with a ridge G, forming the fixed blade of the trimmers and runs longitudinally of said slide, and at the rear end of said liXed blade is a lug H, carrying a pin I, upon which the tilting trimmer-blade K is mounted. Said blade K, which is angled, has an elongated slot N at one end thereof adapted to be engaged by said screw D, the shank portion of which is adapted to slide in said slot for the purpose of opening and closing the trimmers.
In applying my device to a sewing-machine the shuttle-slide is iirst removed and the slide F inserted in its place in the mannershown in Fig. l of the drawings, in which position the screw D will be positioned so as to work in the slot N of the movable trimmer-blade, whereby as the needle-carrying bar is reciprocated said trimmers may be opened and closed.
From the foregoing it will be observed that a simple and eiicient means is provided for ready attachment to a sewing-machine for cutting cloth or threads.
While I have shown a particular form of apparatus illustrating' my invention, it will be understood that I may vary the details of the same, if desired, without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1n combination with the table of a sewingmachine, a slide removably held thereon, a ridge projecting from the upper face of said plate and forming a cutting edge, an angled trimming-blade pivoted at its angled portion to a projection at the end of said ridge, one end of the shank portion of said blade being slotted, a needle-carrying bar, a screw carried by the latter and adapted to have a play in said slot, whereby said blade may be caused to shear against said ridge, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
VIRGINIA WHI'lElIEAl) GLOVER.
