Description

SEWING MACHINE ATTACHMENT. 1 APPLICATION FILED AUG. 18. 1914.

WY ESSES v v INVENTOR -7JA JOSEIEH I-I. SCI'IAAF, OF LOUISVILLE,- KENTUCKY, ASSIGNOB 0F ONE-HALE T0 MARTIN J. REH, OF LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY.
SEWING-MACHINE ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented-Aug.10,1915.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. SCHAAF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident ofLouisville, in the county of Jefferson and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sewing- Machine Attachmentsyand I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in sewing machine attachments, the object of the invention being to provide means to facilitate the stitching of loops to straps at a single operation.
A further object is to provide means which will operate to press the loop on a strap downwardly and backwardly to avoid conflict with the cast-01f of the machine.
A further object is to so construct the work plate of a sewing machine as to alford a slot to permit the loop of a strap to be moved beyond the awl and needle.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 are views of a work plate for chain stitch machines, showing an embodiment of my invention; Figs. 3 and 4 are views of a work plate embodying my improvements for a lock-stitch machine, and Fig. 5 is a view illustrating the application of the plate shown in Figs. 3 and 1, to a machine of the Campbell type.
1 represents a work plate provided with a hole 2 for the passage of a suitable screw to secure the plate to the post or frame of the machine. The plate may also be made with a recess 3 and a hole 4 to receive pins on said post or frame for the purpose of insuring the retention of the plate in proper position on the post or frame.
The plate 1 is made with an elongated slot 5 open at one end, said slot forming an arm 6 near one side of the plate. The arm 6 may be slightly beveled at its forward end, and is provided with an elongated slot 7 for the passage of the awl and needle of the machine.
The plate 1 is provided on its under face with an enlargement 8 disposed adjacent to the inner edge of the arin 6 of said plate, and the forward end of said enlargement (which terminates near the forward end of the arm 6), is slightly beveled or rounded to form a shoulder 9. The enlargement '8 may be made separate from and secured to the plate, or it" may be made integral therewith.
In securing a loop to a strap, one end of the strap will first be inserted between overlying portions of the strap and'stitched in the usual manner. The other end of the loop will then be inserted between the overlying portions of the strap at the opposite edge thereof, and as the stitching at this side approaches the loop, the edge of the latter will enter the slot 5 of the work plate, the arm 6 of the latter being thus caused to enter the loop on the strap and the latter being so disposed that the loop will be on the under side. As the arm 6 enters the loop, the enlargement 8 will engage the loop and force the same downwardly and backwardly out of the way of the cast-off of the machine and thus permit stitching of the end of the loop to the strap portions where the loop normally covers such portions of the strap. It will be seen that with the use of my improvements, both ends of the loop may be secured to the; strap members near both edges of the latter, by machine stitching, and thus the stapling of one end of the loop to the strap and the disadvantages incident to such form of fastening, will be avoided, and the tedious operation of hand stitching sometimes resorted to, will be obviated.
In applying my improvements to a lockstitch machine, I may employ a work plate such as shown in Figs. 3 and t. In this construction, the work plate 10 is made with an extension 11 having a rounded edge 12, and near this extension, an arm 13 projects from the plate, so as to form an open slot 5 between said arm and extension, to perform the same function as that accomplished by the open slot 5 in the work plate 1. The arm 13 is made with an elongated slot 14: for the passage of the needles of the machine, and from said arm an enlargement 15 depends and serves as a stop device to engage the loop on the strap and force it downwardly and backwardly when same arm enters the loop, the same as previously described in connection with the stop enlargement 8 on the plate 1 and for the same purpose.
When the device shown in Figs. 3 and 4 is applied to a machine of the Campbell type, the arch casing 16 of the machine will preferably be formed with a recess 17 to accommodate the loop on the strap while said loop is being secured as above explained.
Slight changes might be made in the details of construction of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof or limiting its scope and hence I do not wish to restrict myself to the precise details herein set forth.
I-Iaving fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Lettors-Patent, is
1. A sewing machine attachment adapted to be made rigid over the work support of the machine, comprising a member adapted to enter a loop on a strap, said member having a needle opening, and an abutment depending from said member, said abutment being located wholly in rear of the forward end of said member and in advance of the needle path through said opening.
2. A sewing machine auxiliary for facilitating the stitching of a loop to a strap, comprising a member adapted to enter a loop on a strap, and an abutment depending from said member in rear of the forward end of said member and at one side only of said needle opening, said abutment being disposed forwardly of the needle path through said opening.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
