THREAD-CUTTER.
NO. 853,979. Specification of Letters Patent. Patented May 21, 1907.
Application filed June 6, 1905. Renewed April 13, 1'90'7. Serial No. 368,086.
To all whom it WI/(Ly concern:
Be it known that I, ARMAND KARRER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Joseph, in the county of Buchanan and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Thread-Cutters and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany ing drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved cutter particularly ada ted for clipping or cutting thread. Myo ject is to provide a device operated by the thumb and adapted to be carried by the hand as long as needed without interfering with the free use of the fingers thereby especially suiting it to the use of the large number of operators upon sewing machines who are employed in manufactories for clothing and other articles.
I attain my object by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top view of the thread cutter shown in position on a hand, with blades parted, a thumb grip and screw pivot and a lug and slot which hold the blades open or shut in the desired position; Fig. 2 illustratesa double loop by which the cutter is carried on the fingers; Fig. 3 is a bottom view of the cutter showing the angle at which the double loop for fingers is set on the handle of the bottom blade; Fig. 4 is a top view of the cutter showing the position of the lug in the slot when the blades are closed; Fig. 5 is a top view of same showing position at which the lug engages with the slot to prevent the opening of blades beyond a clipping position; Fig. 6 is a top view of the bottom blade' showing the loop and lug thereon; Fig. 7 is a top view of the top blade showing its thumb grip and slot; Fig. 8 is a perspective of the device showing the precise form of the loop; Fig. 9 is an end view of the same; Fig. 10 is a detail of thescrew pivot; Fig. 11 is a horizontal section through the pivot and lug, and Fig.
12 is a perspective view showing the lug and slot in one of the handles.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
The manner in which a thread cutter is held is illustrated by hands A A.
B is the top and B is the bottom blade of a thread cutter the respective handles C and C being at slight angles with their respective blades, as shownv in Figs. 1- and 3. These handles with their blades are held on each other by a screw pivot D which permits them to be taken apart readily for sharpening the blades.
On the top blade there is a thumb grip E, this grip consists of opposite flanges d (1 set adjacent to the cutting part of the blade and which slope upward at a suitable width apart to receive the thumb that it may carry the blade back and forth for clipping or cutting the threads.
At the end of handle C there is a lug F which is adapted to engage with a slot H in the end of handle C, said slot being of a width to permit a play of the lug therein that will allow the blades to open to a width substantially as shown, and that will also prevent the blades passing over each other beyond their normal closed position.
i I is a double loop to receive the ring and little fingers by which the thread cutter is held in position on the hand. It is adapted to set between the finger and knuckle joints and bears outward at an angle, as shown in Fig. 3, that will hold thedevice in a position that will conform it to the position of the fingers when the hand is closed for cutting a thread.
This thread cutter does not in any way interfere with the free use of the fingers and may therefore be retained on the hand with out interfering with the work of the operator and be ready at any instant for the'thumb to engage with the thumb grip and close the blade, thereby cutting the thread or other article.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a thread cutter the combination of two blades pivotally connected, one of said blades having thumb engaging flanges, handles on the blades set at an angle thereto, a loop to receive the finger as for the purpose slot in one handle and a lug in the other hanset forth. 1o dle to enter said slot and limit the movement In testimony whereof, I my signature, of the blades. in presence of two witnesses.
2. A thread cutter consisting of two blades, ARMAND KARRER. pivotally connected handles therefor one Witnesses: provided with a slot at its lower end, the SAMUEL G. MANNsor-mnoic,
other having a lug'to enter said slot and a CHARLES JoNAcH.
