UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DAVID L. BABOOUK, OF ST. CHARLES, MINNESOTA.
COMBINED THREAD HOLDER AND CUTTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 248,691, dated October 25, 1881.
Application led November i2, 1880. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID L. BABcocK, of St. Charles, in the county ofWinona and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sewing Machine Attachments, being a Combined Thread Holder and Cutter, of which the following is a specication.
The object ot' this inventionis to furnish a device for cutting the threads and for holding the ends of the threads which remain in the machine with the slack always taken up, so constructed as to be applicable to all machines and capable of being used with nearly all modern attachments.
In the drawings hereto annexed, Figure lis aperspective view; and Fig. 2 is a similar View, showing a modiiication.
Similar letters of reference denote corresponding parts in both gures.
Referring to Fig. 1, a represents the presserbar of a sewing-machine, which is provided with a transverse perforation, usually eniployed or reserved for a so-called quilting77 attachment, but in which 'myimproved device is at present shown secured by a set-screw, b.
My said device or attachment consists of a spring-coil, c, so shaped and constructed as t0 bring two bars,ff, straight, or nearly so, parallel to and in contact with each other, their upper ends being bent apart, as shown, so as to receive the threads and hold the ends when severed.
d represents an oblique knife or cutter attached to or formed upon the thread-holder, as shown, so as to sever the thread by a downward motion of the hand of the operator.
c represents the shank by which the device is attached to the presser-bar.
Fig. 2 ot' the drawings illustrates a similar device, manut'actured of plate metal and adapted to be clamped upon the presser-bar of the machine. The shape of the spring is, owing to the nature of the material employed, somewhat changed, but the operation is the same.
Having thus described myinvention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent ot' the United States- The combination, with the foot-bar, ot' the coil c, forming a spring thread-holder having knife 0r cutter d, substantially as described, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 10th day of August, 1880.
DAVID L. BABOOOK.
