N. PETERS. Pnnmmho n m. wash n nnnnn c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM s. SPENCER, or STURGIS, MICHIGAN.
BUTTON-FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 261,058, dated July 11, 1882, Application filed November 16, 1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. SPENCER, of Sturgis, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Button-Fasteners,
of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention consists of an open hook formed of or secured upon or to a'suitable base, the hook being adapted to pass through the flap of a shoe or similar article or thing and to receive the eye of the button, the eye being held under the hook by an arm, springtongue, or other suitable projection or device, also formed of or secured upon or to the base or secured to the hook.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference in-. dicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a button secured with my improved fastener. Fig. 2 is an edge elevation of the same; and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the fastener, the button being removed.
A represents the button; B, the book; 0, the base, and D the arm, tongue, or projection, which holds the eye of the button under the hook.
The hook and tongue may be of any suitable length, and are preferably made integral with the base by slitting the base in the manner clearly represented in Fig. 3, and bending the strips of metal thus separated from the base up so as to stand at right angles with the base. The book is then turned so that the opening under it will be toward and below'the upper end of the arm or projection, and will bear against it, as shown in Fig. 1. Thus construoted, in order to attach the button it is only necessary to press the eye of the hook and the arm or projection until it passes the end of the hook, when it will be forced under it by the arm or tongue, as will be readily understood.
The fastener may be removed from the shoe or other thing with which it is used upon removing the buttons from under the hook, and used again, if desired.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The buttoirfastener made substantially as herein shown and described, consisting of the base 0, open book B, and the arm or tongue D, as set forth.
. WILLIAM SEYMOUR SPENCER.
