To all whom it may concern: j

Be it known that I, ABNER L. HoL'roN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Norfolk, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in the nature of temporary binders foruse on notebooks especially designed for use by stenographers; and theinven't-ion consists in certain W novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the binder with the extension-lid telescoped into connection with the main lid and the book applied. Fig 2 is a perspective view showingthe same parts with the extension-lid adjusted out of interlockingengagement or telescopic connection with the main lid. Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the same parts as shown in Fig. l with the lids adjusted to form a cover for the book. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective View, partly broken away, ofthe main lid, the extension-lid, and the holder, the lids of the book or tablet being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the holder with the free ends of the wire adjusted to the position they occupy in applying the holder to the book, and Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the holder with its parts in the positions they occupy when applied to the book.

The book A comprises the vloose leaves 13 and the holder 0. The leaves B are perforated at b for the passage of the holder, and the holder is of a special construction, having the bows or arches O, the cross-rod C extending directly between and connecting the opposite bows and uniting with the same at oneend thereof, and thearms 0 projecting inwardly toward each other from the opposite ends of the bows and forming a sectional cross-rod at the opposite ends of the bows from] the cross-rod (J and producing, like the said cross-rod G a base upon which the leaves may rest when shifted to such side of the bows'or arches, as will be understood from the drawings, especially from Fig. 1.

s In order to provide a combined temporary binder and a support for the book or tablet {when used in taking notes and held in the hand of the writer instead of on a desk or other like support, I provide the binder composed. of the main leaf D, the extension-leaf E', and the flexible back F, connecting the adjacent ends of the leaves or lids D and E, so the same can be folded upon each other to provide a temporary binder for the book or tablet and can be telescoped into connection with each other to form a support for both the leaves being written upon and those which have already been used. The main leaf or lid D, like the lid E, may be of wood, pasteboard, metal, or other suitable material or combination of materials, as desired. As shown, the main leaf D is provided in its upper edge with a recess or slot formed in approximately the plane of the said lid and intersected by two longitudinal slots cut in the upper wall of the said recess, the said slots D" and the recess D being of about the same depth from the upper edge of the main leaf, as shown. The extension leaf or lid E is provided atitsinner orlower end with the tongues E at its opposite sides, which tongues are adapted to telescope or fit in the recess D in the upper edge of the sect-ion or lid D and outside the slots D in the said lid, as shown in Fig. 2. The flexible back F is made of sufficient length to enable the lids to fold over the book to inclose the same, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, and also is sufficiently flexi ble to permit the adjustment of the tongues E into the recess D of the lid D, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.

In the use of the invention the book or tab let, with the holder 0 applied, is fitted to the main lid D by inserting its base-bars, formed by the cross-rod O and the arms 0 in the recess D with the bows or arches O projecting through the slots D and the book or tablet resting flat upon the main lid D. The lid E 'is then adjusted with its tongues E in the recess D and outside the slots D, so they will not interfere with the bows. In this adjustment of the extension-lid E the shoulders E at the inner ends of the tongues E. abut the upper edges or end of the main section or lid D and stop the extension-lid when adjusted to the desired position.

In the use of tablets in taking notes when holding the tablet in the hand there is danger when the leaves arethrown over, after cally rigid connection with the main lid and form an extension thereof upon which the used leaves can rest flat, just as when the tablet is used upon a desk. At the same time I so construct the parts that the main and extension lids form sections of a temporary binder and can be closed together, as shown in Fig 3, to inclose the tablet or book A when the book is in use. are adjusted together, as shown in Fig. 1, it will be noticed the tongues at the inner edge of the extension-lid interlock with the adjacent edge of the main lid and form a practically continuous base for the tablet-leaves which are being written upon, as well as those lids which have already been used.

The holder, as illustrated in Fig. 5, is adapted for application to the leaves of the book or tablet, the latter being perforated for the passage of the armsC and the arms 0 being passed down through the perforations in the leaves and then bent from the position shown in full lines, Fig. 5, to that indicated in dotted lines, Fig. 5, and shown in Fig. 6 to lock the holder in connection with the leaves.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

l. The herein-described combined temporary binder and writing-support or base comprising the main leaf or lid provided in its upper edge with a longitudinal recess approximately in the plane of the said lid and near the opposite edges of such lid with slots' extending from its upper edge and leading to said recess, the extension-lid provided at its inner or lower edge with the opposite tongues adapted to fit within the recess in the main lid and between the slots therein and the side edges of said lid, the flexible back connecting the adjacent edges of said main and extension lids and adapted to permit the adjustment of the lids into telescopic connection and also the folding of the lids to form a cover for the book or tablet, and the book or tablet comprising the leaves and the holder securing said leaves and having a base-rod to fit in the recess of the main lid and bows to project through the'slots leading from said recess all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

A combined binder and writing-support comprising the main section or lid provided in its upper edge with a recess and with slots leading thereto, the extension lid or section provided with tongues to fit in the recess of the main lid and outside the slots thereof, and the flexible back connecting said lids whereby they may be adjusted into connection with each other by fitting the tongues of one lid in the recess of the other and may also be adjusted to form a cover for the book or tablet substantially as set forth.

3. The combination in a device substantially as described of a main lid, an extension-lid having means at its inner edge to interlock with an adjacent edge of the main lid and a flexible connection between the said lids substantially as set forth.

The combination in an apparatus substantially as described of the main lid having its upper edge recessed in a plane approximately parallel with that of the lid and also provided near its opposite sides with slots which intersect the said recess, the extension lid having at its inner edge side tongues to fit in the recess of the main lid and between the slots thereof and its side edges and also provided at the base of said tongues with shoulders to abut the main lid, and the flexible back connecting the said lids substantially as set forth.

5. In an apparatus substantially as described a holder for books or tablets comprising the opposite bows or arches, the cross-rod extending between and connecting the opposite bows or arches at one end thereof, and the arms extending inwardly toward each other from the opposite ends of the bows or arches and approximately parallel with the opposite cross-rod whereby there are provided the bows or arches upon which the leaves may be held and shifted, and the base portions at the opposite ends of the said bows to support the leaves when shifted to one side or to the other substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

6. A temporary binder and book-support comprising the tablet-holder, the main lid recessed and slotted in its upper edge for the cross-bar and arches of the tablet-holder, the extension-lid having projecting tongues to interlock with said edge of the main section and the flexible back connecting the main and extension sections.
