PATENT OFFICE.
PAGE-MARKER FOR BOOKS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 733,326, dated July 7, 1903. Application filed $eptember 20, 1901. Serial No. 75,952. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ROBERT R. MILLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at T0- ledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Page-Markers for Books, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to page-markers for books.
It is the object of the invention to obtain a construction which may be readily engaged with any book, large or small, which will not interfere with the free turning of the leaves, and will automatically overlap each succeeding open page regardless of the position in which the book is held.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of a clip adapted to be engaged with either the leaves or cover of the book in advance of the open page, together with a marker secured to said clip and adapted to operate as above set forth.
The invention further consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of an open book, showing the pagemarker applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through a portion of a book, illustrating the operation of the marker. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modification.
A is a clip for engaging either the leaves or cover of the book. This is preferably formed, as shown, either from sheet metal or other comparatively thin material bent into substantially U shaped form, its free ends being adapted to be inserted between the leaves of the book.
B is a leaf-like flap-marker which may be formed of any suitable material and is secured at one edge to the outer end of the clip A. The marker is so attached to the clip as to be free to swing in relation thereto, and this is preferably accomplished by forming the marker of flexible material. The marker must be adapted to automatically return to its normal position, and this is attained by forming the same of an elastic material which will have a tendency at all times to spring into a flat condition.
The clip A is preferably engaged with the leaves of the book in advance of the open page, and in order that the marker may nor- 'mally lie fiat upon said open page said clip is provided with a laterally-projecting portion D, to which the marker is attached. This, as shown in Fig. 3, is formed by a portion of the metal from which the clip is formed, which is bent outwardly and is then given a return-bend, a for attaching it to the marker B, or said portion may be bent as shown at D, Fig. 2.
In use the marker is preferably attached to the book at the top edge of the leaves thereof and preferably centrally of the page. This will leave the outer edge of the leaf and the upper corner thereof free for turning. As before stated, the clip is first engaged with leaves in advance of the open page, so that a number of leaves may be successively turned before reaching those clamped by the clip. When all of the free leaves have been'turned, the reader may quickly disengage" the clip and insert it again at a point farther in advance, and when most of the leaveshave been turned the clip may then be engaged with the rear cover. The marker B is capable of turning so freely thatit will not interfere, and at the same time it will automatically return even where the book is in a horizontal position, as where laid upon a table.
What I claim as my invention is- 1. In combination with a book, a pagemarker therefor, comprising a holder for securing the same to the book, and a leaf-like flap connected to said holder and arranged to normally overlie a page of a book, said flap being formed of flexible material whereby the same may curl transversely upon the turning of the page and slip over the edge of said page to automatically assume a corresponding normal position upon a subsequent page of the book; substantially as described.
2. In combination with a book, a pagemarker therefor, comprising a holder for securing the same to the book, and a leaf-like flap connected to said holder and arranged to normally overlie a page of the book, said flap being formed of flexible elastic material whereby the same may curl transversely upon the turning of the page and slip over the edge of said page to automatically assume a corresponding normal position upon a subsequent page of the book; substantially as described.
3. A page marker for books comprising means for securing the same to a book, and a fiap connected to said holding means arranged to normally overlie a page of the book, said flap being formed of flexible material, whereby the same may curl transversely; substantially as and for the purpose described.
4. A page marker for books comprising means for securing the same to a book, and a flap connected to said holdingmeans arranged 15 to normally overlie a page of the book, said flap being formed of flexible elastic material whereby the same maycurl transversely, sub stantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 20 in presence of two witnesses.
ROBERT R. MILLER.
