Description

D. DUFF.
Patented Sept. 14, 1909..
ATTORNEYS DAVID DUFF, or new YORK, N. Y.
BOOK-REST.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. let, 1909.
Application filed June 28, 1909. Serial No. 504,706.
To all whom it may concern:
'Be it known that I, DAVID DUFF, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Stapleton, borough of Richmond, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Book-Rest, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to extensible book rests, andits object is to provide a new and improved book rest, for use on tables, desks and other supports, and which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture, attractive in appearance, and arranged to permit convenient and quick extension or contraction according to the books to be accommodated at the time, and to securely hold the books in position. For the purpose mentioned, the book rest is made in sections, each having an end member and a bottom member, the bottom members of the sections be ing mounted to slide one on the other, to move the end members nearer to or farther from each other, and the bottom members being arranged approximately in the same horizontal plane.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved book rest; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
The book rest is formed of two sections A and A, each approximately L-shaped, and having bottom members and end members, the bottom members being formed of longitudinally-extending rods B, B, of which the inner terminals of the rods B of thesection A are rigidly connected with each other by a cross bar C, and the rods B of the other section A are rigidly connected with each other at their inner terminals by a cross bar C. The rods B of the section A are mounted to slide in bearings formed in the cross bar C, and the rods B of the section A are mounted to slide in bearings formed in the cross bar C, the rods B and B being arran ed in approximately the same horizontal plaiie, as will be readily understood by reference to Figs. 1 and 2. The ends of the sections A and A are formed by posts D, D, of which the posts D are secured to the outer terminals of the rods B while the posts B are attached to the outer terminals of the rods B. The posts D are connected with each other by spaced transversely-extending connecting rods E, and similar connecting rods E connect the posts D with each other.
Now by the arrangement described, the sections A and A can be moved in a longi tudinal direction, so as to move the ends nearer to or farther from each other, according to the number of books to be accommodated, it being understood that the books are set transversely on the rods B, B, with the outer covers of the two end books resting against the inner faces of the ends of the sections A and A, that is, against the posts D and D. As the books rest on the rods B and B, it is evident that the sections are not liable to slide accidentally out of the adjusted position, and hence the books are at all times held in proper position, that is, are practically clamped between the ends of the sections A and A.
By having the bottom sections arranged in the manner described and shown in Fig. 1, the cross bars C, C form stops one for the other, when extending the sections A and A to their utmost capacity, that is, by drawing the sections apart until the cross bars O and C abut one against the other.
The boo-k rest shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture and exceedingly attractive in appearance.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A book rest, comprising two sections, each having an end member and a bottom member, to the outer terminal of which the corresponding end member is secured, the bottom members of the two sections being arranged in the same horizontal plane and formed of longitudinal rods, cross bars secured to the inner terminals of the said rods, the rods of one bottom member being mounted to slide in bearings formed in the cross bar of the other bottom member, the said plane, each end member being formed of two subscribing witnesses.
sald rods, and transverse connecting rods 7 V Y 5 for connecting the posts of each member Witnesses: With each other. 7 I THEo. G. HosTER,
In testimony whereof I have signed my PHILIP RoL HAUs.
'rods being arranged in the same horizontal name to this specification in the presence of i posts secured to the outer terminals of the i v D f
