To a? Z 1072 am it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN W. HADDOX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Parkersburg, in the county of \Vood and State of Vest Virginia, have invented new and useful. Improvements in Knockdown Mantels, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a mantel of the knock down type designed primarily for ornamental purposes, and which is commonly termed a cabinet mantel.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a 'mantel" of this character which is formed from a plurality of detachable sec,- tions, which may be detached or assembled as the occasion may require.

The improved mantel is so constructed that it may be used as a basemantel, which is usually a mantel without a mirror-but provided with ornamental cornices, or the detachable sections of the mantel may be adjusted to form a half cabinet mantel, which comprises a base and a'mirror, or the detachable sections may be connected in such a manner as to provide afull cabinetmantel, which includes a base, a mirror, and an ornamental cornice above the mirror.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a knock down cabinet mantel comprising detachable sections which may be neatly compact for shipment or for storage if desired, and to provide a mantel which may be formed entirely of sheet metal. a

\Vith these and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel arrangement and combinationof parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out inthe claims. n

The preferred embodiment ofthe invention has been illustrated in the, accompany- .ing drawings, although no restriction is necessarily made to the precise detailsof construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications within the scope of the claims may be resorted to when desired.

The base section 2 includes a pair of verticallside members 6 which are identical in construction and which are formed of sheet I metal. Cooperative with'the side members 6 to form the base section is a cross. piece 7 which is also stamped from sheet metal. The channeled portions 10 of the sections 9 are adapted to receive a casing 13'which is secured thereto in any suitable manner in order that the casings may provide a base for the pilasters, while the capitals of the pilasters are provided with an ornamented annular ring member 14: which may be secured in any manner desirable to the upper portion of the pilasters to form the capital therefor.

Jnder each of the side members 6 and eX- tending within the pilasters 10 is a base 15 which prevents the side members and pilasters thereon from becoming distorted :while the mantel is in a knock down condition. Each side member 6 is further provided with an aperture 16 adapted to receive a screw or similar fastening element which may be inserted within the wall to which it is desired to attach the mantel.

The cross piece 7 is U-shaped in cross section and is adapted to be interposed between the side members'6 and detachably connected therewith to assist in supporting the shelf 5 and also to prevent the spreading of the side members when the mantel is assembled.

The shelf 5 like the cross piece 7 is U-shaped in cross section and has one of the side walls thereof provided with an upstruck portion terminatingin a flange 17 spaced from the end of the shelf, as indicated at 17. The flange 17 of the upstruck portion is adapted to rest upon the upper wall of the cross piece 7, and is secured to said cross piece by fastening elements such as screws, or the like, as indicated at 18.

The mirror section 3 is of a width corresponding to the outermost side walls of the sections 9, and of a height corresponding to the height of the section Sextending above the shelf '5, and has the side and top edge thereof formed. with a flange 19'which maintains the mirror section spaced from the sections 8 and forms an attaching portion for the cornice of the mantel. The mirror section 3 is recessed, as at 20, and the edges of the sections surrounding the recess are bent to provide a flange for receiving the edges of the mirror 21 which is secured within the said flange in any suitable manner. The mirror section 3 is detachably connected with the sections 8 by means of brackets 22 each of which has one end thereof adapted for insertion in aslot 22' in the sections 8 and the-remaining end slotted and adjustably connected with the mirror section .in

In practice when it is desired to assemble the mantel the sections 9 are secured to the sections 8 of the crosspiece 7 secured to the sections 9. The shelf 5 may then be secured to the cross piece and positioned upon the sections 9 in the manner above described if it is desired to have the above-mentioned sections form the cabinet mantel when assembled.

If a full cabinet mantel is desired the cornice section may be secured to the flange on the top of the mirror section, thus providing a full cabinet mantel.

It will of course be understood that the mantel may be disassembled in a manner opposite to that described'forassembling the same to form a cabinet, half cabinet, or

From the foregoingstatement it is readily apparent that a 'mantel construction has been provided which may be formed from sections stamped from sheet metal; and

which. may be easily assembled or disassembled as the occasion may require, further: more a mantel construction; is provided which may be ornamented as desired and covered with veneer to simulate a wood man-' tel now in use. It will also be noted that: the sections form a mantel which is inexpensive of manufacture, durable in construction, and highly efficient in use,and also that a mantel constructed from the sections would be comparatively'light in .weight in comparison with the mantels ,now in use.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is 1.
