Be it known that I, ConNELrUs VAN DER y BOOM, a citizen ofI the United States, and a is clearly illustrated in Figs. 3 and therein being represented as lbroken away;

resident of Platte, in the county of Charles Mix and State of South Dakota, have invented a new and Im roved Extensible Picture- Frame, of whicli the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

p This invention relates to frames, and `especially to small, light frames such as used or holding pictures.

The objectof the invention is to produce a frame of simple construction which will be neat in appearance, and which can be adjusted so as to hold pictures of various dimensions within certain limits.

A further obj-ect is to construct the parts so 4as to enable the frame to be hung with its longitudinal axis in a vertical. or a horizontal pos1ti^n,-and to provide means for removably attaching a supportin leg to the back of the frame in such a way tlgiat theframemay rest upon a support' with its longitudinal axis in a vertical position or in a horizontal position.

The invention consists in the construction and combination of parts to be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.

The corners of the frame are formed of 'cornices or corner pieces 11 which are similar to each other. These corner pieces have legs or

The short legs 13 receive the bars 3 and act as guides. These 'sheaths are not rectangular in form but their inner sides are formed with elongated rabbet in Fig. 6. I provide these grooves 14 so that the cross section ofthe sheaths is made to iit nicely to the form orcross section ofthe bars, at the same time these rabbet grooves 14 constitute va shelf or ledge i to support the edges ofthe photograph vor picture 15 at the corners thereof. On the rear side of the end section 1, there is' attached to the rail an anchor plate 23 as is shown in Fig. 7. To the upper edge of this anchor late a ring or eye 24 is attached which enablles the frame to be hung u as be readily understood. The o y of this plate 23 is offset from the rear face of the bar so as to form a pocket 25, and the lower portion of the plate 23 is bent outwardly so as to form an inclined lip 26. Near the point of juncture between the lip and the ody of the'plate, a transverse slot 27 is formed. This plate 23 is given this form so as to enable a rear leg 28 to be fastened in position. The leg section 31 is formed below into an enlargement or foot 34, which rests upon the support for the frame when the frame is placed upon a table or'manteliece. The upper section 29 is bent upon itse f to form a downwardly projecting tongue 35, and the up er portlon of this tongue, Vwhere the materlal is doubled, is bent so as to beinclined to the direction of the body of the section.

Near this point, on its rear side, the leg section 29' is offset outwardly so as to form a head or nib 36, as shown. It should be understood that/this leg section 29 is resilient so that if the ton e 35 is thrust up` into the pocket 25, the ead or nib 36 will snap into the slot 27 and hold the leg in osition.

On one of its longitudinal si es the frame is provided with an anchor plate 37 similar to the plate 23, and having a ring 38 like the vring or eye 24.l The anchor plate 37 is constructed in all respects similarly to the plate 23 so that if desired, the leg 28 may be detached from the anchor late 23 and laced at the anchor plate 37. his enables t e leg to be used to support the frame on its long side. In this position, of course, the

29, 30, and 31 will be telescoped with each other so as to shorten the leg to its pro er length. The rings 24 and 38'are pivota y attached to the

23 and 37 respectively, so that when the frame is not hung up they will fold up behind the frame so as to be concealed from view.

The frame is admirably adapted to be constructed of sheet metal or cardboard.- Attention is called to the manner in which the corner plates 21 overlap with the face plates carried by the bars. It should be understood' that even at the most extended position of the frame, these parts will still overlap so that the' frame always presents an'ornamental appearance.

Having thus described my invention, I

claim as new and desire to secure by Letters o Patent,-

1. An extensible picture frame having corner pieces with corner lates, and guide sheaths on the rear sides o said` lates, `side and end bars running in said s eaths and having face plates on the forward sides thereof overlapping said corner plates, clamping screws for clamping said bars in said sheaths, and clips carried by said clamping screws pro'ecting inwardly andholding the picture 1n t e frame. g l

2. An extensible icture frame having corner lates, guide siii rear si es thereof, said guide sheaths having means on the inner sides thereof for supporting the picture within the frame, side bars and end bars running in said sheaths and having face plates overlapping said corner plates, and means for clamping said bars in said sheaths.

3. Anv extensible picture vframe having corner plates with gulde sheaths on the rear sides thereof, the forward facesof said guide sheaths being removed from said corner eaths attached on the plates wherebyv guide spaces are formed therebetween, side bars end end bars running in said sheaths and having'face plates on the forward sides vthereof extending yinto said guide spaces, .said sheaths having slots there- 1n, and clamping. screws passing through said slots and mounted in said bars.

4. Anl extensible corner lates With ulde sheaths on the rear sidest ereof, sai guide sheaths having means on the inner sides thereof adapted to support the picture within said frame, end bars and side. bars having face plates attached to the forward sides thereof overlaping said corner plates, said sheaths having ongitudinal slots therein, clamping screws running in said slots and mountedin said bars, and clips carried by said clamping screws and projecting inwardly to engage the edge of the picture` held in said frame.

5. An extensible picture A frame having corner lates with uide sheaths on the rear sides t ereof, saidy guide sheaths having means on the inner sides thereof adapted to support the icture within said frame, endl die lates at" bars, andsi bars having face tached to the forward sides thereo overlapping'said corner plates, said sheaths having ongitudinal slots therein, clampin screws running in said slots and mounte in said picture frame having bars, and clips carried vby said clamping screws and proj ectin inwardly to engage the edge of the picture held in said frame, said bars having graduations from their middle points reading outwardl and co erating with said sheaths to indicate the dlegree of extension of said frame.

6. A picture frame having an anchor plate attached to the rear side thereof and forming a pocket, and a leg having a tongue received in said pocket and resiliently engaging said plate, said plate and said leg having, the one a bead, and the other a slot receiving said vattached bead and securing said leg to said plate.

7. A picture frame having an anchor plate to therear side thereof and offset therefrom to form a pocket, the lower end of said plate being formed into an outwardly inclined lipz and a le having an inclined tongue received in s'ai pocket and adapted 20 to resiliently engage said inclined li said lip having a slot therein, and said leg aving a bead opposite said slot and engaging-the saine to retain said leg.
