HARRY L. BEACH, OF OOSIIOOTON, OHIO.
DISPLAY APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 25, 1908.
Patented June 16, 1908.
Serial No. 429,215.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY L. BEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at O0- shocton, in the county of Coshocton and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Display Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for dis playing merchandise or other articles, and the primary object is to provide a simple structure made up almost entirely of sheet metal, said structure being of a take-down character so that it will occupy but little space for storage and transportation, and the parts thereof being so constructed that the structure can be readily assembled by an unskilled person.
One embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, where- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the apparatus when set up. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fi 2.
imilar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the embodiment illustrated, a standard 4 is employed that is preferably constructed of sheet metal bent into channel form, in other words, comprising spaced side walls 5 with a front wall 6 connecting the same, the rear side of the standard being open. In the lower portion of this standard is fitted a filling block 7 preferably of wood. A base conopening through the rear ed .walls, and inclining forwardy and downstitutes the support for the standard, and comprises outstanding feet 8 that are divergently disposed. The feet are formed in sets, each set being constructed of a single piece of sheet material suitably ornamented and having its central portion 9 located against one of the side walls. Screws 10 or other fasteners passing through the central portions 9 and through the lower ends of the side walls are engaged in the filling block, and thus serve to hold the various parts together, while at the same time maintaining the holding block in position.
The side walls 5 of the standard are provided at intervals with obliquely disposed slots 11, said slots having their rear ends es of the side wardly, as shown. A series of inclined shelves 12 are also provided, these shelves being of sheet metal and having upturned flanges 13 at their front edges. The shelves are preferably though not necessarily of different lengths and widths. Each shelf is provided with an opening 14 through which the standard 4 is passed, and the portions of the shelves in rear of the openings are en gaged in the slots 11, while the portions in front of said openings abut against the front wall 6. It will be noted by reference to Fig. 2 that the said front wall 6 terminates short of the upper ends of the side walls, and has its upper end spaced therefrom, forming vertical slots 15 in said side walls, said slots having angularly offset lower ortions 16. A display plate 17 is slidably tted in the vertical portions of the slots 15 and has at its lower end a rearwardly extending flange 18 that engages in the portions 16 of the slot. This plate may be employed for advertising, or other purposes, and is preferably of ornamental configuration, as is also the shelves and feet.
It will be evident that the parts which go to make up this display apparatus are very simple and can be cheaply produced. Moreover they can be readily assembled, as it is only necessary to insert the filling block 7, place the feet plates in position, and secure the same by the fasteners 10. The shelves can then be successively slipped over the upper end of the standard, being held in substantially horizontal position, and after their rear portions have been introduced into the slots 11, their front portions are allowed to swing downwardly, thus effectively locking them in position. The plate 17 is then slipped into the slots 1516.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advan tages of the herein described'invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art without further description, and it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In display apparatus, the combination with a hollow standard, of a filling block located in the lower portion thereof, outstanding feet having portions located against the lower portion of the standard, and fasteners passing through the said portions of the feet and standard and into the filling block.
2. In display apparatus, the combination with a hollow standard of channel material, of a filling block located in the lower portion of the same, sets of outstanding feet having portions located against the opposite sides of the lower portion of the standard, and fastening devices passing through said portions of the feet and standard into the filling block.
3. In display apparatus, the combination with a standard havin a slot in its upper end, formed of angular y disposed portions, of a plate detachably engaged in the slot, said plate comprising a body and an angularly disposed flange, a portion of the body being located in one portion of the slot, and a portion of the flange being disposed in the angularly disposed portion of the slot, and supporting means carried by the standard.
4. In display apparatus, the combination with a standard having an obliquely disposed slot in one side, of a supporting member hav ing an opening through which the standard passes, said member having a portion on one side of the opening engaged in the slot and having the portion on the opposite'side of the opening bearing against the opposite side of the standard.
5. In display apparatus, the combination with a standard formed of sheet material and comprising spaced side walls and a front wall connecting the side walls, said side walls being provided with slots opening through their rear edges, of a supporting shelf of sheet material having an opening through which the standard passes, a portion of the shelf at the rear of the standard being engaged in the slots of the side walls and the portion of the shelf in front of the standard bearing against the front wall thereof.
6.. In display apparatus, the combination with a standard of sheet material comprising spaced side walls and a front wall connecting the side walls, said side walls being provided at different points with obliquely disposed slots that open through their rear edges, of a filling block located in the lower portion of the standard, a base comprising feet having portions located against opposite sides of the standard, fasteners passing through said portions of the feet and standard into the filling block, a plurality of forwardly and downwardly inclined shelves located one above the other and having openings through which the standard passes, the rear portions of said shelves being engaged in the slots of the side walls and the front portions bearing against the front wall of the standard, and a display plate detachably mounted on the upper end of the standard. v
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
