Patented May 15, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 2 Claims.
This invention relates to that class of toy building sets the units of which may be put together in various ways to form different structures; and the invention has for its object to provide a set of few parts or units which may be easily assembled to form a large variety of ornamental toy structures, as also to form useful structures, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings Figs. 1 and 2 show structures each consisting of an assembly of four unit members. Fig. 3 shows a structure made up of four unit members, including two forms of ornamental finishing members. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a structure consisting of an assembly of two unit members. Figs. 5 to 11, inclusive, are detail views of unit members employed in the structures shown in the other views. Fig. 12 shows an ornamental grill which may be made up from the units of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, 12 denotes cubes each provided with a plurality of holes 13 which may, if desired, extend through the cubes which may be joined together by connecting pieces or bars 14 provided at their ends with dowel pins or studs 15 extending outward from shoulders 16 at said ends, said shoulders fitting against fiat faces of said cubes. The dowel pins 15 are of such size as to fit tightly, but removably, in the holes 13 in the cubes 12. These connecting pieces or bars may be of any desired length, three different lengths of these pieces or bars being shown in Figs. 8, 9 and 10.
In the ornamental structure or assembly shown in Fig. 1 curved segment pieces 17, provided with holes 1'7 near their ends, are employed. These segments are secured in place by headed pins 18 (see Fig. 11) passing through the holes 17 and tightly, but removably, fitting in holes 13 in the cubes 12.
In the structure or assembly shown in Fig. 2 a ring 19, having holes 19 is also secured to the cubes 12 by pins 18.
In the assembly shown in Fig. 3 cubes 12, connecting pieces or bars 14, of different lengths, and ornamental knobs 20 of two different forms are employed, these knobs having dowel pins or studs 21 fitting holes in the cubes 12.
While the invention is largely intended for use as a toy, it may also be employed for useful and ornamental purposes, one example of which, as an ornamental grill, is shown in Fig. 12. This grill comprises cubes 12, connecting pieces or bars 14 of different lengths, segment pieces 17, pins 18, rings 19 and knobs 20, these parts fitting together like the similar parts shown in Figs. 1,
2, 3 and 4. This grill construction is merely one of many useful articles, such as ornamental telephone stands or the like which may be made up by different assemblies of the units hereinbefore described.
The units of this invention will preferably be of wood but may be of any other suitable material, such, for example, as papier-mach or aluminum or other metals.
From the foregoing it will be understood that an infinite number of different assemblies or structures, such as bedsteads, chairs, towers or the like, may be made up by difierent arrangements or assemblies of two or more of the units shown and described.
Having thus described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. A building set adapted to be fitted together to form a composite structure, said set comprising cubes each provided with a plurality of holes, connection pieces or bars having shouldered ends to fit against the faces of said cubes and having also dowel pins projecting from said shouldered ends and adapted to fit tightly, but removably, in said holes, curved members having holes therethrough, the distance and angular relations between said last-named holes and the holes in said cubes being such that certain of said holes in said members will register with the holes in said cubes on sides of a right-angular structure composed of the bars and cubes, and headed pins fitted to pass through said holes in said members and into said holes in said cubes.
2. A building set adapted to be fitted together to form a composite structure, said set comprising cubes each provided with a plurality of holes, connection pieces or bars having shouldered ends to fit against the faces of said cubes, and having also dowel pins projecting from said shouldered ends and adapted to fit tightly, but removably, in said holes, rings having holes registering with holes in said cubes, headed pins fitted to pass through the holes in said rings and into the holes in said cubes, and ornamental knobs having dowel pins to enter said holes in said cubes.
ALFRED AUDET.
