To @ZZ 107mm 'it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER R. MUR- Docii, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Extension-Tables, of which the following description, in connection with t-he accompanying drawing, is a specification, like letters on the drawing representing like parts.

This invention relates to extension tables and has for one of its objects to provide a novel table of this nature in which the extensible sections are supported on the cantaliver principle and without the necessity of employing' legs which are secured to and move with said sections. The advantage of this construction is that all the legs of the table may be rigidly and firmly secured to the main body and a much more rigid structure can be secured than where the legs are secured to and move with the extensible sections, as is the common construction.

Another object of the invention is to provide an extensible table having within its body a pocket to receive the leaves of the table.

Other objects of my invention will be apparent from the following description of one embodiment of the invention.

Referring now to the drawings wherein I have shown a selected embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view of an extension table made in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof; Fig. 3 is a section on the line .i1-, Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on the line g/-t, Fig. l; Fig. 5 is a section on the line o o, Fig. t.

`The table herein shown comprises a main body which has rigidly secured thereto the legs of the table and is firmly supported thereby, and the extensible section or sections which when extended are supported on the cantaliver principle. The main body of the table is formed with the two sills 3 and l to whichthe central portion 5 of the table top is rigidly secured and to which the bot-tom boards 6 are secured. The bottom boards have depending therefrom the skirt portion T which extends around the table and the legs 8 of the table are shown as rigidly secured to the skirt portion 7. I have herein shown four legs for supporting the table, but the number thereof is not essential to the invention. These legs are shown as placed in the corners of the skirt portion and as secured thereto by suitable bolts 9. This construction makes a rigid non-yielding frame for the table, but one from which the legs 8 can be readily removed if it is desired to pack the The table herein shown has two extensible sections and the tops of such extensible sections are designated 10 and 11 respectively. The extensible top section 10 is rigidly secured to two slides 12 which have a sliding interlocking engagement with the sills 3 and 4 and the top 11 of the other extensible section is rigidly secured to two other slides 13 which also have a sliding interlocking engagement with the sills 3 and d. This sliding interlocking engagement may be secured in a variety of ways, but I have herein shown each sill as provided on each side with the dove-tailed or undercut rib 1st and the slides 12 and 13 are provided with the dove-tailed rib 15 to fit under the ribs 14, as clearly seen in Fig. 4:. The dove-tailed shape of the ribs 15 serves to prevent the slides 13 and 12 from becoming displaced laterally.

The slides are herein shown as provided with stops 16 which are adapted to engage shoulders 17 formed on the sills 3 and et thereby to limit the outward movement of the extensible sections. I make the slides 12 and 13 as long as possible and yet permit the table to be closed with the top sections 10 and 11 against the sides of the top section 5, and by means of this construction the extensible sections l0 and 11 are iirmly supported in their extended position because even in such extended position the slides 12 and 13 engage the sills 3 and e' for a considerable length. It will be observed that the extensible sections are supported entirely by the slides and without the employment of legs which are secured thereto. This is an advantage because all the legs of the table can be irmly and rigidly secured to the body or frame thereof and the table will have an equally firm support whether it is closed or extended. The body is provided on each side with the rim 20 and the extensible sections are provided on each end with the rim 21. In order that this rim may remain unbroken when t-he table is extended I propose to provide the extensible sections with the rim extensions 22 on each table into a small space.

The space Q5 between the sills 3 and et and between the bottom board G and the top 5 constitutes a pocketin which the extra leaves 26 may be stored when they are notbeing used. These leaves can be readily removed by extending one of the sections, as shown at the right in Fig. l, thereby to 'form a suiiicient opening between the extended top portion l() and the iixed top portion 5 to permit of the ready removal of the leaves.
