POKER-TABLE.
No. 886,630. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 21, 1908.
Application filed June 12, 1907. Serial No. 378,494.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, ISAAC MAsoN, a citizen of the United States, and'a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Im rovement in Poker-Tables, of which the fol owing is a full, clear, and exact-description.
The purpose of the invention is to provide a table top especially constructed for playing the game of poker, which poker to is adapted to constitute an auxiliary top or the table, particularly a table having a rectangular top member, and also to so construct the auxiliary table top that it can be quickly.
and conveniently placed and held in position upon a table and as readily and expeditiously removed, without in. any manner marring the table to which application is made.
It is .a further purpose of the invention to so construct 'the'auxiliary or poker top, that one section can be folded-over upon the. other when not raiuired for use, and to so construct the tab e to which ap licationjis made, that its to will be providec with a drop sec tion or leaf corresponding to a folding section of the poker top, enabling the tableand combination poker to to be placed in acorner of a room when t e table is to be used for 1 ordinary. purposes or when it is desired to have it temporarily out of the way. The invention consists in the novelconstruction and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully set forth and pointed out in the claims. p Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming apart of this specification, in which similarcharacters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures. Figure 1 is a lan view of the im roved poker top applie to'a table having a 'nged leaf, the table appearing in dotted lines;
Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken practically.
on the line 22 of Fig. 1'; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken substantially ion the line 3'3 of Fig. 1 Fig. 4-is a plan View of the improved auxiliary or poker top ap lied to an ordinary table, that is to say, a table whose top is solid or in one position, the table top'appearing in dotted lines, and Fig. 5 is a detail sectlon through a portion of the drop leaf of the table shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, 'illu'strating also in side elevation a portion of the supporting legfor said leafand'the stopforthe said leg, the section beingtaken practically on line 55 of Fig. 1.
A represents what I term a poker top, being adapted as an auxiliary top to cover the main to B of an ordinary table, this poker top A eing adapted especiall for use in (playing the game of poker, an to that en it, is provided with a marginal series of cells or pockets 11 open at the to the upper edges of the said ockets or cels-11 bel preferably flush with the unbroken central portion of the said top A, but the top A is divided into two sections tion being by preference equal in size to the other, and the said sections a, and a'of the auxiliary or poker top A are connected by hinges 10 so placed that one sect n, the section a for example, may. be-folded over upon the opposing section a, ,as is shownin dotted lines in Fig. 3. The auxiliary or poker top A may be of any desired marginal contour, preferably, however, it is rectangular or polygonal and in the drawings the said auxiliary or poker top A is given an octagonal shape, and this shape is usually preferred."
A horizontal partition 12 extends from the inner walls 11 of the pockets 11 in direction of the center of the auxiliary top 'A, as is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, and vertical partitions 13 at the inner end portion of the horizontal partition 12 connect .the horizontal partition with the main-members of the said top A, it being understood that the horizontal partition 12 and vertical partitions 13 are separated at the line of. separation between a and a, one secthe'two sections a and a of the top. The inner marginal portion ofthe horizontal partition 12 is soformed that the space surrounded by it conforms to the shape of the table top B upon which the auxiliary or poker top A is to be placed, and the space Lust referred to receives-the top B of the tale, as is shown particularly at 14 in Fig. 1, and when the to B of the table is so received the vertical artltions 13 will be adjacent the side edges of the said table top B, as is shown in- Figs'. 2 and 3; and'the section a, for example, of the auxiliary or poker top A is provided with an inwardly extending horizontal flange 15 that extends beneath the under face of thetop of the table to B at the marginal surface, that is at two si to as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. l.
in'applying the auxiliary or poker top A to es of the said table .4 folded over upon the section a of the same top and the hinged leg 21 can be carried in /a table to supporting leaf section B the section a, of the auxiliary top is folded over upon a section a, as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, and-then the section a is sli ped over a corner portionof the table top efiecting the slip connection between the two tops shown especially in Figs. 1, 2 and 3; then the section a, of the auxiliary top is folded over and down upon the main top B. e
In Figs. 1, 2 and 3 the table to B is in two .sections b and b, the section b eing a dro leaf section, and the section bis sup orte by preferably three legs 17 located at t e corner ortions thereof, and'the two sections 1) and at their abutting edges are connected by hinges 16.
Up er and lower side bars 18 and 18 and 19 'an 19 connect the legs, extending adjacentthe margin of the table top B, and near the straight inner edge of the section b of the table top B cross bars 20 and 20 are made to connect 0 posing legs, as is best shown in Fig. 2. e drop leaf section b of the table top B is supported in horizontal position by a leg 21 adapted for en agement with the central portion of itsun er face. Thisleg 21 is provlded with up er and lower bars 22 and 22*" connected by inges 23 with the central portions of the upper and lower cross bars 20 and 20. When the swinging leg 21 is in osition relatively to the. drop I) the upper edge of said leg 1s made to travel in engagement with an inclined plane 24.- until it strikes a stop 25, as is shown in full lines in Fi 5, and in dotted lines in Fig. 1, the said inc ined plane and stop being secured to the under face of the drop leaf section b of the said top B. See Figs. 3 i
and 5. Thus when a table is not required,
the section a of the auxiliary top can be I -direction of one side of the table top B, and
thedropleafsection b be permitted to fall to the lower vertical osition shown in dotted lines in Fig.1, there y enabling the structure to be readily placed in a corner of a room out of the way-J; I have illustrated an application c0 Patent:
In Fig.4 I of the improved auxiliary or poker to -:Ato atable' top B, that is in one piece and: portedby four stationary legs 26'cp iii1ected y suitable braces 27, but the mode of application of the auxiliary or poker top A to the form of table top B is the same as the application to' the d vided table top B, and the construction of the auxiliary top is the same. I
Having thus' described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters 1. The combination with a rectangular i table topv consisting of a fixed and a drop leaf section, of an auxiliarytable top constructed in hinged sections and having a chamber formed at its under face, of slightly greater dimensions yet the same shape as the marginal portion of the table to and adapted to receive the latter, said tab e and auxiliary top being divided a proximately in the same vertical plane, the c ambered portion of that section of the auxiliary to which lies over the fixed top section having orizontal flanges extending inward from the lower ortion thereof for engagement with the un er face of said fixed top section, the chambered portion of the other section having walls vertical throughout their hei ht, and means for supporting said dro lea at a level with the fixed top to support t e'auxiliary sections in their unfolded positions or to allow the same to be dropped out of the way when the auxiliary, top sections are folded together.
2. An auxiliary top adapted to be detachably held on an ordinary fixed table top, consisting of two sections hinged together, cleats or bars attached to the under face of said auxiliary top and forming an inclosure of the same shape as the fixed table top, but of slightly greater dimensions, so as to fit down over and contain the same, the lane which divides said top into sections a so dividing said chambers into two equal portions, and elements fixed to and extending inward from the lower portions of the cleats or bars on one section and adapted to engage with the under'face of the fixed table top, whereby said latter section may be slipped laterally 'upon'the table top and held thereon against vertical'movement, the cleats or bars on the other section having unobstructed inner -sides, whereby said latter section may be folded down over the fixed table top after the said first named section is in place to hold the entire auxiliary top against lateral movement.
3. As a new article of manufacture an auxiliary table to adapted to be detachably held on a fixe table top, consisting of two sections hin ed together, the sections being provided wit a plurality of marginal pockets in their upper. faces, and on their under'faces with a chamber corresponding in shape to the fixed table top but of slightly greater dimensions than the said top, and inwardly extendingflan es on one section at the bottom of-the wal of the chamber and adapted to en age the under face of the fixed table top w en the said section is sli ped upon the said tabletop, the wall of the cliamber on the other section being unobstructed to permit thesaid section to fold down over the fixed 1 table top.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
