A'ITD R N EYB Home?" h. 6072mm Patented Nov. 2, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE LOOSE-LEAF BINDER AND BRIEF CASE Homer n. Oohun, Yuba City, Calif.
Application March 21, 1942, Serial No. 435,741
2 Claims.
This invention relates to a loose leaf binder and brief case and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will embody two complete ring binders in one case, the two binders occupying no more space than a single binder and having appreciable more capacity while at the same time every sheet is instantly accessible for removing or replacing.
A further object is to provide apparatus of this character which will be formed of a few strong, simple and durable parts, which will be inexpensive to manufacture, and which will not easily get out of order.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, it being understood that various modifications may be resorted to within the scope of the appended claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the loose leaf binder and brief case.
Figure 2 is an end elevation of the device shown in Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the device in open position, showing the two ring binders.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a vertical sectional view of the loose leaf binder and brief case taken approximately on the line 5--5 of Figure 2, parts being shown in elevation.
Figure 6 is a cross sectional view taken approximately on the line 6-6 of Figure 5.
Figure '7 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 1-1 of Figure 6.
Figure 8 is a fragmentary end elevation of the loose leaf binder and brief case.
Figure 9 is a detail longitudinal sectional View taken on the line 9-9 of Figure 8.
Referring now to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate similar parts in the various views, the loose leaf binder and brief case comprises a body section 10, a lid section I I connected to one side of the body section and a flap 12 connected to the other side of the body section, these parts being formed of leather or other suitable material.
The body section is provided with end closures l3, formed of metal, leather or other material attached to the body section through the medium of a flange l4, see Figures 8 and 9, which receives the respective U-shaped portion l5 oi the body section. The flange I4 is secured to the respective edge portion by rivets H3.
The lid section is equipped with similar end closures I1 provided with flanges I8 which receive and are riveted as shown at L9 to the edge portions of the lid section. When the device is in the closed position shown in Figures 1, 5 and 7, the closures of this section are received within the closures of the body section, to permit expansion of the brief case as papers accumulate in the loose ring binders which will now be described.
The lid section ll and the flap section l2 are each'provided with a respective loose leaf binder 20 of conventional type including a backing plate 2| and a plurality of split rings 22. The loose leaf binders are located close to the body section, see Figures 3 and 4, and the backing plate 2| of each loose leaf binder is attached by rivets 23 to a metal plate 24, see Figure 5 and 6, which is disposed outside of the lid or flap section as the case may be. At the longitudinal edges of the backing plate the lid member and the flap member are respectively hinged to fold into closed position and for this purpose one U-shaped slotted section 25 of the hinge is carried by the lid section or flap section as the case may be and the other U-shaped slotted section 26 of the hinge is carried by a leather strap 2"! clamped between the backing plate and the metal plate 24 by the rivets, both halves of the hinge interfitting and embracing a pivot pin 28, see Figures 4 and 6.
The body section [0 and the flap section I2 are provided with flexible loop handles 29 which are engaged through respective slits in the sections and are secured to the sections by rivets 30 passed through the sections and through the handles.
The flap section is releasably held closed by conventional snap fasteners 3|, one section of the snap fastener being secured to the lid section "and the other member being secured to the flap section.
The body section III and the lid section II are provided with respective large pockets 32 which are secured to the inner faces of the sections and are located between the end closures of the body section when the brief case is closed.
When the brief case is closed, the loose leaves attached to the lid section and those attached to theflap section by the respective loose leaf binders, rest upon each other, see Figure 6. When the brief case is opened out to flat condition and laid upon a support th loose leaves and index sheets are instantly available to select predetermined sheets or to remove and replace sheets as desired.
From the above description it is thought that the construction and operation of the invention will be fully understood without further explanation.
What is claimed is:
1. In a loose leaf binder and brief case, a rectangular body section, a flap section projecting 10 from one end of the body section, a lid section projecting from the opposite end of the body sec tion, the said sections being formed from a single length of flexible material, a loose leaf binder disposed transversely of the body on the flap and lid sections adjacent the ends of the body, a pair of angular elements secured to the longitudinal margins of the body and lid sections having flanges disposed at right angles to the sections and inwardly of their longitudinal edges to pro- -v vide closure walls, the said flanges of the respective sections being arranged to overlap when the sections are in closed or folded position, and means for fastening the said angular elements to the margins of the sections.
2. In a loose leaf binder and brief case, a rectangular body section, a flap section projecting from one end of the body section, a. lid section projecting from the opposite end of the body section, the said sections being formed from a single length ,of flexible material, a loose leaf binder disposed transversely of the body on the flap and lid sections adjacent the ends of the body, a pair of angular elements secured to the longitudinal margins of the body and lid sections having flanges disposed at right angles to the sections and inwardly of their longitudinal edges to provide closure walls, the said flanges of the respective sections being arranged to overlap when the sections are in closed or folded position, means for fastening the said angular elements to the margins of the sections, inner plates mounted on the flap and lid sections, each of the said loose leaf binders being secured to said plates, a second plate mounted exteriorly of each of said sections opposite to the inner plate and having riveted connection therewith through the flexible ma terial, and pivoted hinged elements providing reenforced connection between the body and flap and lid sections between the inner and outer plates.
