come in the present invention by tightly bind-i.
, ing together all the leaves of the filler so that there is produced a binding effect between the leaves, thereby relieving the portions of the sheet at the ring of a great deal of the strain that would ordinarily be produced when operating the book.

tion is the provision of adevice consisting of a pair of cooperatlng members adapted to be positioned on the rings of the binder and engage the opposite sides of a loose leaf filler. positioned on said rings and means for securing said cooperating members in clamped re-.
' lation against opposite sides of said filler.

together.
Other objects are simplicity and economy Holes 17 should be elongated to permit the of construction, and ease of operation.
i '35 With these general objects in view as well as minor objects which will appear during the course of the detailed specification, refview of the securing device shown in the cooperating position;
Fig. 3, is an enlarged perspective view of the two members of the securing device shown in separated relation;
'50 Fig. 4., is an enlarged fragmentary sectional view showing the securing device in position on the filler and on the rings of the binder D 'on line VV of Fig. 2. Similar references designate like parts throughout the several views and 10 designates the cover of a loose leaf binder and 11 the sheet-carrying member having a plurality of divided rings 12 spaced apart to cor m Fi 5, is an enlarged sectional view taken respond with holes 18 formed adjacent one edge of each of the filler sheets 14; 1
The loose leaf binder just described is of ordinary type and when the filler is placed therein and the covers opened the sheets of the filler may be moved on the ring independently of other sheets, thus separating the sheets and making it possible to easily tear that portion of the sheet'adjacent the ring openings.
'When the device for securing together the binding edges of the sheets of the filler is positioned in the binder as hereinafterdescribed, the binder may be used in the ordinary manner without clamping sheet-s to gether. 1
The present invention eliminates this difiiculty and provides for the securing together of the binding edges of the sheets of the filler by means of two cooperating members 15 and- 16 which are preferably made of relatively -na-rrow metal and provided with holes 17 adapted to receive the rings of the binder.
free movement of 15 and 16 on the rings Members 15 and 16 are made'of suflicient length to overlap the opposite edges of the filler to permit the securing together of these two members. Member 15 is provided at its opposite ends with inturned parallel projec 'QO tions 18 and member 16 is also provided with inturned parallel projections 19 which are spaced apart a slightly greater distance than are the projections 18 on'15, so that the two members may be fitted together as shown in Fig. 2. One side of each of the projections 19-is folded inwardly to form channels 20 into which the adjacent edges of projections 18 are adapted 'to'be inserted. The opposite edges of projections. 19 are provided with w pivotally mounted latches 21 which engage and bind together the adjacent edges of the projections 18 and 19 when in the operative position. For securing the members 15 and 16 together in a predetermined clamping position against the filler, similar cooperating corrugations 22 and 23 are provided on the projections 18 and 19 respectively. These corrugations are disposed transversely and do not extend to the outer edges of the pro jections so that when the two members 15 and 16 are pressed to the closed position as shown in Fig. 4, similar corrugations will intermesh and when latch 21 is moved to the closed position the two members will be securely locked together against outward position, member 15 is then fitted on one side of the binder with the rings 12 extending through holes 17 and the member 16 is likewise positioned on the opposite side in like manner. The filler 14: is then positioned on the rings in the usual manner and rings 12 are then closed. The operator then opens latches 21, presses projections 18 into position in channels 20 as described above, and moves the latches 21 to closed position as shown in Fig. 2, thus securing the binding edges of the filler sheets in a fixed relative position. When in this position the entire filler will move as a unit on the rings 12, thus eliminating the possibility of placing too much strain on a single leaf against said rings which occurs in the ordinary ring binder when the leaves are permitted to separate in the ordinary Way.
While I have shown and described what appears to be the preferred form of embodiment of the present invention, yet I desire to reserve the right to make any such formal changes as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. Ina loose leaf binder having ring hooks, metal plates adapted to be mounted upon said ring hooks and having interlocking ends, and clamps for maintaining said interlocking ends in engagement. I
2. In a loose leaf binder having ring hooks, a pair of metal plates having flanged ends adapted to be mounted upon said ring hooks and means for securing said ends together in different positions.
3. In a loose leaf binder, ring hooks, a pair of cooperating members having interengag signature.
CLARENCE B. IRVING.
