SHADE-ROLLER.
Patented Oct. 24, 1916.
Application led April 30, 1915. Serial No. 24,856.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I,'STEWART HARTsHoRN, a citizen of the United States, resident of the city of Newark, county of Essex, State of'New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Shade-Roller, (Case 0,) of which the following is a specification This invention relates to shade rollers'of the type in which the shade is attached to the roller by means of clips engaging with a groove in the roller.
The invention is particularly applicable for use in connection with the fastening means disclosed in my twoapplications for Letters Patent, specifications executed on even date herewith, entitled kShade roller, Serial Number 24,854, and Shade roller, Serial Number 24,855.
The object of the invention is to make a strong, rigid and very cheap shade roller having a dovetailed groove extending from end to end.
Another object is to reduce the number of parts of which the roller is made and the number of joints necessary to secure the parts together.
These and further objects will more fully appear from the following specification and considered together or separately. y ,f
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of a shade rollerembodying the invention; Fig. 2 is an end View of the same, on an enlarged scale.
In all views like parts are designated bv the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawings, particularly Figs. 1 and 2, the roller 1 is shown as formed of sheet metal. The sheet is bent to cylindrical form. The greater part ofthe perimeter of the roller is smooth and curved, as shown. The portion marked 2 is an area which is noncylindrical. This area is coterminous with the groove The groove is formed by means of the trough 4.
. In the embodiment chosen for illustration the trough has a fiat bottom 5 andlinclined sides 6 and 7 The trough is integral with the wall of the rollerl. The trough is therefore made' by bending the sheet to zig-zagV shape to define the f'sides and bottom of the groove. In the embodiment chosen for illustration and shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the joint of thetwo over-lapping edges of the roller is adjacent to the side G. To constitute this joint the edge of the curved part ofthe roller is creased, forming a flap S. This Hap is bent to vassume al position substantially parallelwith the side 6 of the trough and is secured thereto by solder or other suitable fastening means. The width of the flapB is substantially the same as the width of the other side 7 of the trough so that a symmetrical groove 3 with sides the same width is produced.
Associated with the cylinder hereinbefore described are end plates 11 having a'pin orpins 12 therein for. engagement with the roller supporting brackets. These end plates may be made of any suitable material and shape.
In accordance with the provisions of the patentstatutes, I have described the principle of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now'consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is merely illustrative and that the invention may be carried out in other ways. y
Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: Y
1. A shade roller formed of a single plate of sheet metal bent to substantially cylindrical shape, one edge of the sheet being bent to forma dovetail trough having a at bottom, the other edge ofthe sheet being bent to forma flap on an acute angle to the plate,- said flap resting within the trough and in contact with the iap forming the free wall of the trough', the end of the iap abutting against the bottom of the trough to form a smooth surface therein.
2. A shade roller formed of a single plate of sheet metal bent to substantially cylin STEWART HRTsuonati drical shape; one edge of the sheet being trough to form a smooth surface therein, bent to form e dovetal trough having a and means forsecuring the flaps together. 10 Hat bottom, the other edge of the sheet This specification signed and witnessed being'bent to Aforni a-flap on an acute angle this 28th day of April, 1915.
