UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HOWARD N. LINCOLN, OF MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF 'lO JAMES J'. HORAN, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT.
BOX.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HOWARD N. LINCOLN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Middletown, in the county of Middlesex and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in boxes, particularly cigar boxes, and has for its object, among other things, to provide a cover that may be folded back without destroying the revenue stamp, and at the same time provide a surface for display advertising.
To these and other ends, my invention consists in the box, having certain details of construction, and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts in the several figures; Figure 1 is a perspective view of a box, with the cover open, constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof upon line AB, showing the cover in its closed position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the box showing the relative position of the cover and back when the cover is open; and Fig. 4 is an end view of a box having a modified form of my invention applied thereto.
In practice my invention is especially valuable when applied to a cigar box, because it is necessary that the cover remain attached to the body of the box and the revenue stamp uncanceled until the contents of the box have been sold. In my improved box the cover is made in sections and one of the sections secured to the box body so that the entire cover may when open fold around the body and occupy the minimum space, and at the same time present a sur face for display advertising.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the front of the box 2, the back, 3 the bottom and 4 the ends, which project. slightly above the front and back. The cover is preferably constructed of the two members 5 and 6, which are secured together by a hinge 7 usually of cloth or other flexible material, and the member 6 is secured to the back 2 by the hinge 8, also of cloth or other Specification of Letters Patent.

tached to the members 5 and (5 and the back 2, with the portions 10 and 11 unattached and hanging loose when the cover is closed. This method of securing the sheet allows the cover to lay flat when closed, as shown in Fig. 2, with the ends supported upon the front and back of the box and the sheet is taut and flat when thecover is open, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, in which position the end of the member 6 is resting upon the top of the back 2. The advertising is preferably placed upon the display sheet 9 so that when the cover is open and the box full, all of said advertising will be above the top of the contents of the box, as per the illustration in Fig. 1.
The cover shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is constructed with two members, the front edge of the outer member when the cover is open being above the bottom of the box, as shown in said Fig. 2, but it may be made of three or more members, as shown in F ig. 4, wherein the additional member 12 is folded under the bottom of the box.
There are minor changes and alterations that can be made within my invention, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the exact construction herein shown and described, but claim all that falls fairly within the spirit and scope of my invention.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A box having a cover formed in sections, a flexible hinge connected at one side thereof to the inner section of the cover and at its opposite side, to the rear side of the box, said hinge intermediate its sides being free of connection with the rear box side and said cover section and being of such width to permit the said cover section to have its rear side edge seat on the top edge of the rear side of the box, and a combined finishing and display member composed of a sheet having one end attached to the inner front face of the rear side of the box and extending from the box bottom to points below the bottom side of said. hinge, said sheet having a loose portion which extends across the hinge and having a portion beyond the top side of the hinge attached to said cover section at points intermediate the sides of said cover section, said sheet beyond said second attached portion being loose and the loose portion extending from said second attached portion across the joint between the said cover section and the adjacent cover section and being attached to the latter at points away from said joint and extending the 10 entire width of the said adjacent cover section.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
