M. F. HAMSLEY.
METALLIC ROOFING.
No. 403.750. Patented May 21 1889.
UNITED STATES MILLARD F. HAMSLEY, ()F
METALLIC SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed February 11. 1389.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, MILLARD F. IIAMSLEY, of Nashville, in the county of Davidson and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valley-Sheets; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
My invention relates to improvements in metallic roofing, and has particular reference to an improved construction of what are termed the valley-sheets.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a plan view of a section of roofing embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross-sectional view of a valley-sheet constructed in accordance with my invention; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of two adjoining valley-sheets, showing the manner in which they are fitted together.
Similar letters of reference in the several figures indicate the same parts.
Each valleysheet is bent or creased at or about its middle, as at 1, in order that it may conform to the shape of the roof to which it is applied. It is also turned back upon itself at each side, so as to form nailing portions 2 of double thickness, through which to drive the securing-nails, and both the body of the sheet and the overlapping turned-back portions thereof are formed with one or more coincident ribs or corrugations 3,for the purpose of preventing water from being driven up onto the nailing portions, as well as for imparting stiffness and strength to the article along both edges. The turned-back or overlapping portions of the sheet extend considerably beyond the ribs 3, and at their extremities are turned up slightly in order to facili- PATENT OFFICE.

tate the introduction of the eo-operating roofing-sheets 7, and are also stiffened and strengthened at said turned-up portions by hems 5, as shown in Fig. 2. Each valleysheet has at one or both of its lower corners a part of the nailing portion or nailing portions 2 turned back on itself, so as to provide inclines or bevels (3, that facilitate the introduction of said sheet into the next adjoining sheet, as shown in Fig. 3, thus enabling the sheets to be driven together, so as to form tight joints with each other. The exposed surface of the body' of the valley-sheet is preferably left plain, as shown, though it may be struck up into an ornamental design, if desired. The roofing-sheets '7 which co-operate with these valley-sheets, may be of any approved kind or construction, though I prefer to use such as are covered by my patent, No. 309,459, dated December 16, 1884..
I claim as my invent-ion 1. As an improvement in metallic roofing, the herein-described valley-sheet turned back upon itself at each side and having the nailing portions 2, the ribs 3, and the upturned edges 4, as set forth.
2. The valley-sheet herein described, turned back upon itself at each side and having the nailing portions 2, the ribs 3, and the upturned edges 4, strengthened by the hem 5, as set forth.
3. The valley-sheet herein described, turned back upon itself at each side and having the nailing portions 2, and the ribs 3, and the turned-over corner 6, for facilitating its introduction into the adjoining sheet, substantially as described.
M. F. IIAMSLEY.
