Description

(No Model.)
W. L. 86 H. HEBERLING.
METAL ROOFING.
Patented Nov. 24, 1891'.
- UNITED STATES \VILLIAM Ii. IIEBERLING AND HENRY HEBERLING, OF HAVANA, ILLINOIS.
PATENT OFFIC METAL ROOFING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 463,831, dated November 24, 1891.
Application filed April 1'7, 1890- $erial No. 348,420. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM L. HEBER- LING and HENRY HEBERLING, citizens of the United States, residing at Havana, in the county of Mason and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Roofing; and we do hereby declare the followingto be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to letters of reference marked thereon. which forms a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to sheet-metal roofing, more particularly to that class of standingseam roofingin which one flange of each sheet is folded over and interlocked with an opposite flange of an adjoining sheet.
Our object is to provide a double-lock seam in which the fastenings will all be under cover and which can be formed more rapidly and more economically than any other of its class.
Our invention will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawing.
The figure shows a section of our roofing with its seams in different stages of completion.
S S and S are sheetsorstrips of metal roofing with their edges flanged. The flange a stands higher than the flange b, as shown at A. The height of a is about one and seveneighths inches and that of bone and onehalf inches. The flange b is secured with common cleats r, as at A, and the taller flange a is placed against it, and while in this position retaining-hooks c are formed at convenient intervals on the edge of the flange a and folded down over the edge of the flange b, embracing it, as there shown The flanges a and Z), with cleats 1', are now folded over at the dotted line as x A and brought down firmly against themselves, as at A, thus completing a simple, neat, and efficient double-lock seam.
It would not be a departure from ourinvention to trim oif the edge of the flange a between the retaining-hooks c, as indicated by the dotted line Y Y at A; nor is it material to.our invention whether the sheets receive our peculiar construction wholly on the building or partially atthe factory.
A special advantage of the herein-described construction of double-lock seam is its utility in an almost finished condition a factory product.
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is'
1. In combination, the flanges a and b, the
taller flange at having retaining-hooks c at intervals along its edge, which fold over and embrace the edge of the flange 6, both flanges thus engaged being folded down against them selves, as shown and described.
2. In combination, the flanges a'and b and cleats r, the flange b secured to the roofboards by the cleats r, as shown, andthe taller flange Ct having retaining-hooks c at intervals along its edge, which fold over and embrace the edge of the flange b, all the parts thus engaged being folded down against themselves, as shown and described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
WVILLIAM L. HEBERLING. HENRY IIEBERLING.
