'ro amJ wHoM IT MAY concerter: v 4
Be it known that I, ANDREW PARKER, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Bnrenu-Bcdstead; and I do hereby declare the following to be afnll, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the artto make and use the same, reference beinghad to the' accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing-- Figure l'represc'nt's a longitudinal vertical section of this invcntion. Figure 2 is a. plan or top view thereof. Figure 3 is a. sectional side elevation thereof when folded up to resemble a bureau;
Similar letters indicate corresponding parts. j This invention relates to a bureau-bedstead, which, when drawn out, assumes the form and shape of a regular bedstead, so that the'same .can be used precisely in the same manner as a bedstc'ad, and at the same time it can be folded up and brought in a comparatively small compass, whenever it may be desired.
The invention consists in the arrangement of a a'p, which is hinged to the head-piece of the bedstead, and provided with V-shapcd grooves in its under surface, so that the same, when folded down, will catch over u V-shaped projections on the foot-.piece and retain the same firmly in position.
The head and foot-pieces are provided with check-pieces, the upper edges of which are hollowed out, so that when the bedstcad is folded up, two semicireula-r cavities are formed, which are filled up by side wings hinged to the ends ofthe flop on the head-piece.
Between the head and` the foot-pieces is the slotted frame, which is made in two parts, connected to each other and to the head and foot-piccesby hinges, so that the same can be folded up or extended', as may be required. p A represents the head-piece of my bureau-bedstead, which is provided with a hinged Hap, B. The space above this Bap may be occupied by a looking-glasmor itmay be ornamented in any suitable manner, and from the top edge of the head-piece project two lips, a, which catch over the edge of the flap, when the same is turned up to the position shown in iig. 1, and retain it in position. i
The hendpiece A connects with the foot-piecc-0 by a. slatted frame, D, which iscomposed of two parts,
united to each other and to the, head and foot-pieces by hinge-joints, in -such a manner that 'the same can be folded up to the position shown in lig. 3, or. unfolded to the position shown in tig.- 1.
When the b'edstead is unfolded, the head-piece 'A may be steadicd by a leg' secured to it in any suitable position. y
When the frame D is folded, the check-pieces o of the foot-piece C come close up to check-pieces b oi the 'head-piece, and by turning down the ap B, to the position shown in iig. 3, the frame is completely enclosed, and the furniture assumes the appearance of n. bureau, leaving room enough between .the folded frame -and the head and foot-pieces for the mattress and bed-clothes. l i
The flap B is provided nt its under surface with V-sliaped grooves,-0Z, which,v when said flap is turned down, catch over corresponding V-shaped projections e on the foot-piece, and retain the same rrnly in position.
,Y The check-pieces b c of the head and foot-pieces are hollowed out at -their upper edges, so that, when the frame D is unfoldcdfthe' furniture will assume the shape of a. regular bedstead, and when. said 'frame-is folded up, and the head and foot-pieces-are brought together, cavitiesf dre formed, which are closed u`p by side wings g hinged to the fla'p B. 4 p
When the frame D is unfolded, the side wings g are folded into the position shown in figs. 1 and 2, so that they are out of the way.
By these means a piece of furniture is obtained, which, when unfolded, has the precise appearance of a common bedstead, and which can be readily folded up and brought in the form of a bureau. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, anddesire to secure by LettersPatent, isi A bureau-bedstend, composed of e. head-piece, A, and foot-piece C, united by a hinged frame, D, and provided with a hinged iiap, B, which, when folded up, is retained by lips a on the head-piece, and which, when folded down, catches over V-shaped projections e on the foot-piece, as shown and described.
