JOSEPH SEVCIK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALFTO JAMES SEVCIK, OF SAME PLACE.
COT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 534,231, dated February 12, 1895. Application filed August 9, 1894- Serial No. 519.813. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH 'SEVCIK, a citi zen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Oookand State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improveinents in Cots; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a novel construction in a cot and more especially in the frame ofa folding cot, the object being 'to provide a cot that can be folded into a small compass and readily opened up, and which will stand in its open position without danger of collapsing accidentally.
The invention consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating my invent-ion,Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a cot constructed in accordance with my invention and takenon the line 1-1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary bottom plan view of the same.
Referring now to said drawings said cot is made in three main sections, namely,-the mattress frame and the head and foot pieces. The mattress frame consists of the side pieces 1 and two end pieces 2 fastened to the upper side of said side pieces. The mattress extends between and is secured to the cross pieces 2. The head and foot pieces are similar in construction and each consists of the side posts 3 and any suitable framework 4. The head and foot pieces are so made that the posts 3 stand opposite theends of the side rails 1 of the cot, and at such points the posts are flat so as to have a firm bearing upon Upon the inner face of each post is an arm or projection 5 that is adapted to encounter the lower face of the cross-piece 2 when the cot is open.
Each post is provided with one of these pieces and these arms or supportsare pivoted to links 6 that are pivoted to the side rails 1 of the cot.
The cot is opened and closed in the following manner: When closed the head and foot pieces are in the position shown in dotted lines to the right in Fig. 1. When it is desired to open up the cot the head or foot piece is moved away from the bottom of the mattress frame and turned on its pivotal connec- 5 5 tion with the link 6, and the said link turned on its pivotal connection with the side rails until the parts assume the positionshown in dotted lines to the left of Fig. 1, whereupon the head piece is moved farther until the arms or projections 5 encounter the bottom of the cross-pieces 2. The cot is then in position for use and it will be noted that the length of the link is such that the posts 3 lie flat against the ends of the mattress frame, while the arms 5 encounter the bottom of the cross-piece 2. In this position the cot can be moved in almost any position, except being turned upside down, without danger of collapsing, and can even be tipped up on one end. The only way in which the cot can be folded up is to first move the head or foot piece longitudinally away from the end of the mattress frame to the position shown in dotted lines to the left of Fig. 1.
I claim as my invention- A cot comprising amattress frame consisting of end cross pieces 2, and side pieces 1 to the upper corners of which said end cross pieces 2 are secured and which extend a considerable distance below said end cross pieces 2, head and foot pieces having posts 3 located opposite said side pieces 1, an inwardly projecting, rigid arm or projection 5 upon each of said posts 3 upon which the end cross pieces 2 are adapted to rest and which are adapted to stand between the upper and lower edges of said side pieces 1 and to extend inwardly of the ends of the same, and links 6 extending between the end of each of said arms or projections 5 and the side pieces 1 and pivoted at their opposite ends to said parts, the pivotal connection between the said. links 6 and side pieces 1 be ing located adjacent to the lower edge of the latter, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
' JOSEPH SEVOIK.
