JOHN R. DEIHM, OF POTTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING BEDSTEAD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,548, dated October 13, 1896.
Application filed April 25, 1896.
To (LZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN R. DEIHM,of Pottsville, in the county of Schuylkill and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Beds; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in folding beds.
The object of the invention is to provide an improved folding bed so arranged and constructed that the head and foot sections can be folded down, as well as the legs of the bed, so that when the parts are so folded the whole framework, together with the head and foot pieces, can be so closed that a very little space will be occupied in storing the same when not in use.
, The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and in combinations and arrangements of parts more fully described hereinafter, and particularlypointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of one end of a bed, showing the same in an upright position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation, the head of the bed being in an upright position and the foot-board and the legs thereof at that end being folded. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the clamping-plate to which the legs and the head and foot sections are pivoted. Fig. 4.- is a similar view of the leg detached from the bed proper.
'Like letters of reference mark the same parts throughout the different views.
a indicates the side frame of a bed of any desirable construction, and b c the head and foot sections thereof. These head and foot sections, as well as the legs 61, are not permanently secured to the frame of the bed, but are so arranged that they can be folded down whenever desired.
e 6 indicate a series of links, four being shown, although the number and length there Serial No. 589,024. (No model) of would altogether depend upon the shape and size of the bed.
f indicates a clamping-plate, the lower portion thereof being secured near the bottom to the leg (Z, the outwardly-extending part g, integral with said plate, embracing the end pieces of the bed-frame. The upper and lower cut-away portions g h form the bearing-surface for the reception of the rounded or reduced surfaces of the lower portion of the posts or standards of the uprights of the head and the upper curved portions of the legs, both of which when arranged in their normal or operative positions bear between the cut-away portions of said plate. The plate f is provided with suitable securing means at its upper and lower portions, so that the legs of the bed and the head and foot sections can be pivoted to said plate and can be easily moved or turned by means of said pivotal connections within said plate.
1' indicates a series of links, the upper one being pivoted at j and to the upper and lower sections 1) 0. These links have the interme diate connections formed by the buttons is uniting the same, the said links that are located between the legs of a bed to the head and foot sections being provided with a cutaway portion having the projection t", and when the parts are resting in their normal or upright position the cut-away portion readily bears against the buttons 7c; and it should'be noticed that the link is connected to the uprights of both the head and foot sections and that the central fastening means is provided in the side frame of the bed, which is lettered m, so that really this fastening means forms the pivotal point for the closing or folding of both the head and foot sections of the bed and to legs thereon, the links of the bed being also connect-ed, as at n, similar to that of the head-sections. The lower portions of the posts of the uprights are reduced or cut away, as shown at 0, so that when they are in their normal positions for use they bear against the upper surfaces of the side frame.
19 indicates a bar secured to the rear side frame, and this bar is provided with the outward or flared part g, which is adapted to fit on and snugly embrace the upper and lower heads of the upright posts, so that when the parts are in operative position these bars snugly and permanently hold the several parts in place.
The clamping-plate f, which is pivoted to the posts of both the head and foot sections, as well as to the legs of the bed, not only acts as a support for side legs and sections, but also firmly binds both the side and rear frames of the bed proper.
Supposing the bed to be in an open condition and it is desired to fold the same, the head and foot sect-ions are lowered, the links connecting the said sections being forced down. These sections are then practically flush or nearly so with the upper surface of the side frames. The legs are then pushed inwardly, the bottom links being forced away from the button k'of one of the intermediate links, so that said links can be folded against or closed onto the bottom edges of the lower part of the side frames. In this way the bed or cot can be folded into a small compass ready for storing in a very limited space until the same is again ready for use, when the reverse operation can be repeated.
The cut-away portions of the several links form bearing-surfaces, so that they will easily come into contact with the buttons formed thereon, and by reason of the projections eX- tending above said cut-away portions they snugly and partially surround said buttons and securely hold the links together when the bed is in an unfolded position.
It should be noticed that the links are so arranged that while the upper ones are connected to both the head and foot sections there are smaller or intermediate links loosely secured thereto, as well as to the legs, so that the fulcrum-point for said links is at the side of the bed-frame, and that this side frame acts as a support for and a pivotal point for the links thereof, the turning-point being at this particular part of the bed-frame and the links merely being connected to the head and foot sections and with each other and freely movable, as described.
The device is very simple in construction and composed of a minimum number of parts, and it is evident that various slight changes or modifications might be made in the form and arrangements of the parts described without departing from the spirit and scope of my invention. Hence I do not wish to limit myself to the exact construction herein set forth.
Having thus fully described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. A bed consisting of the side and end frames, the plate secured to the corners thereof, the head and foot sections, the legs pivoted thereon, a series of links connected to said sections and to the legs, and a spring-bar engaging said sections and legs, for the purpose set forth.
2. A bed consisting of the side and end frames, the plates secured to the corners thereof, said plates extending above and below the frame and having pivotal journals on their ends on which the head and foot sections are carried, the legs pivoted thereon and a series of links connected to the head and foot sections and the legs and having the pivotal connections, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN R. DEIHM.
